Front oil cooler and Valance on Carrera - 930s, RUF or other?

Hey Guys,

I'm interested in installing a front oil cooler in my '87 Carrera and would like some advice on a few things:

1. What are my options in changing the front valance to allow for a front oil cooler? I see that Rennspeed has a few options that work on a Carrera...

930s Factory Style Front Valance

RUF 911 Front Valance

Any others?

2. Do these valances work in conjunction with a Carrera Whale Tail? I believe the front and rear spoilers are supposed to work together.

3. Which valance accommodates the best cooling? I understand that this is a combination of cooler size, air flow and ducting capacity.

4. What is the ride clearance on these valances? I will be using this is a street/track car, so I need do want to go too low!

5. What brand and size oil cooler do you recommend?

Many thanks!

This is what a RUf 'yellowbird' front bumpercap looks like

The oil cooler is a B&B 5.5 X 2.25 X 20 this is the only cooler on the car and works well for 3.8 and 3.6 for street use

the guys w/ 3.6 and up that track this have found that they need a bigger cooler, usually 5.5 x 2.25 x 24 or 6 x 3 x24
here's a good thread documenting the 6x3x24 install

I've got the 930S style front valence on my 84. I also fabricated a front splitter for it. The set-up works very well on the track with the 75' Carrera whaletail. I also have an elephant oil cooler in the front for the 3.6 in back.

Guys - thanks for the great replies. Love the pics and how the front turned out. I will talk to the folks at Tre and ER.

Do you guys know the dimensions of the grill on the 930s versus RUF front balance?

The Ruf grill opening is ~24"x4"

Bill, is there a difference in grill size between Rennspeed's RUF valance that pairs up to a Carrera bumber and the full blown RUF front bumber and valance? In other words, the grill on your car looks smaller than the grill on tkosier's at the top of the thread. Perhaps it's just an illusion.

Here are the pics from Rennspeed's site. RUF valance on Carrera bumper:

RUF bumber and valance:

I don't know why Rennspeed calls this a Ruf

Ruff 'Yellowbird' fronts came as either a full bumper cap w/ a separate grill and lip spoiler(as seen on my silver car) or as a valance w/ an integrated lip

here is what the valance looks like, it hangs below the stock '74-89 crash bumper

The Rufs use a separate inner structure w/ grill seen here, aftermarkets won't have this separate inner piece, they will have it all integrated

Here are all the major pieces of a Ruf valance + cooler

Mine is "Kremer Style" valance that TRE developed in house. Dave and crew at TRE prepared, mounted and painted the valence/bumper and shipped to me complete. They also prepared the Sterab oil cooler and lines which I will need for a pending 3.6L conversion. Check out the wrapping paper Dave uses - guess he knew I was an Old Hippie.

Mark - I really dig yours because its not as conspicuous as the others. How is the ground clearance and fitment? What size cooler did u get in there?

Tkosier - I Luke yours bcs that cooler opening looks like it would accommodate a big unit. How is the clearance on yours? And what size is the cooler?

The cooler is Setrab 172. 22" wide, 6.5" tall, 2" thick. Fits opening perfectly. Dave did have to notch the bottom lip of the bumper so there would be room.
Clearance is tight, but it fits. You can see from photo that the top 1/3 of the cooler is close to the front tub. The bottom 2/3 has pretty good flow.
Tom

Thanks for the great info, guys. In reading some of the other threads on here, it sounds like ducting is a key issue to address. It seems like the ultimate solution is to remove material from the front tub and create a duct, or use ER's oil cooler duct. I'm open to this option, but I'd prefer to install a cooler, monitor the temps and then decide whether tub cutting is worthwhile.

For you guys that have the larger cooler openings in your front valance (e.g. 23.5x6.125), do you think your setup cold accommodate a 26x7x2 cooler (total dimensions)? This is an easily sourced and affordable aftermarket option, and it would only be an inch wider on each end than the large 24" B&B cooler). It seems like height would be less of an issue than width, due to the curvature of the tub and many valances, making the gap between the cooler end and the bumper narrower than in the center of the cooler. The "911 RSR Front Bumper 7″, Not Flared" from Gt-Racing (911 Bumpers — GT Racing :: Porsche Performance Parts — Page 2) looks like it would accommodate a larger cooler:

Notice how there isn't the tapering between the cooler opening and the brake duct openings, as there is with Tre's Kremer valance. This makes me think the extra width may not be an issue. Here's a could shots of the cooler I'm considering:

I appreciate your input!

What do you recommend when running a front license plate?

Move to a state that doesn't require one That's a good question. Pennsylvania does not require a front plate, but most of our neighbors do. I've seen several non-Porsches with front plates mounted to the side of the bumper. Not a great solution for most valances is it would either cover a fog light or a brake duct. I wonder if certain states have exemptions for cars that like ours...

Illinois requires front plated, but my 911 has never had one. Neither does my X5. I had a City of Chicago cop give me a hard time once with my 528 at O'Hare airport, but that was it so now when I park at the airport I put the plate on my dashboard.
