915 clutch question
I'm installing a new clutch assembly in a '80 SC and after bolting the pressure plate to the flywheel, the clutch disc has quite a bit of free play. I have the alignment tool installed, but the disc seems to "float" between the PP and flywheel. Am I missing something or is this normal?
Thanks for your help! |

No, that would not be normal. The reason you use an alignment tool is because the clutch should not be able to be moved once the PP is bolted to the flywheel. Once the clutch is depressed, the throw-out bearing moves toward the PP presses the fingers releasing pressure. At that time only would there be free play.
It's really hard to say what is wrong without seeing. Are you sure you have the correct clutch assembly? What brand? What part #? Does it look exactly like the unit you removed? Also, are you sure it is correctly seated against the flywheel?

My bad...had the ring gear on the wrong side of the PP...the product of a long night and NOT taking my time. Thanks for the response!

While you are in there, you should consider replacing the Fork, Pilot Bearing, Throw Out bearing and Guide tube w/NEW SEAL if applicable.
My Wrench saved me money by not changing these but to my dismay the bearings were toast and I developed a GRITTY feel in the clutch travel while she is on. You will not feel anything when she is off by pressing the clutch, but when on it may be there over time.

Done, done, done and done!
What started out to be replaceing a cracked fork has ended up being a total overhaul! I can't do something half assed... Thanks for the suggestions though. |
