I have a pdf file of the 87 manual. If you can't find an 88, your welcome to a copy.

To answer your immediate question, look between the seats on the floor. There is a switch that turns on the blower that blows the hot air from the back of the car to the front. From there the dashboard controls will regulate and direct the heat.

Kinda funny - I have an '88 also, and for all the things I love about the car, I still find the temp controls to be quirky and confusing. Controls for the heat in between the two front seats, completely separate A/C controls in the center console, and then the less-than-obvious dashboard controls. I've read the manual a few times, and I confess that I still don't completely understand them. If there was a gun to my head and I had to turn on the defroster in 5 seconds, I wouldn't like my chances...

When you add to the equation that the heat and the A/C aren't the greatest, you question whether you are doing it right even more!

Heat isn't the greatest? My 88 gets hot enough to melt a grill cheese at the vent! yes I did this

For the OP, get the 87 pdf....88 is really the same. Do you have auto heat (dial in the middle 0-9 or manual dial 0-4)?

AC is not good, but heater is way too much. Still can't master the control panel on the dash. Everytime I touch it, I have to play with it to see how it works, then I won't remember how it works the next day.

I've owned my '88 for 11 years & I still can't figure out the HVAC system. Let's see, heater controls are down here, A/C controls are in a different place below the dash (not that the A/C works worth a darn), & vent/defrost are in another place (!) on the dash controlled by a whole bunch of levers...I find myself just moving things around until I get mostly what I want, & not even sure how I got it. But the vent fan is nice & quiet....

And I still can't understand why I can't get "vent" air to come of out of the dash (A/C) vents! Talk about poor design....

But everytime I drive the car I have a HUGE smile on my face.
