Is there a rule of thumb for the distance the ride height adjusters should be from the body of the car? I finished installing new T-bars and used some washers on the ends of the T-bars to keep the springplate adjusters from rubbing.....but how much distance is correct?
I have about 1/4 inch presently.

I assume we are talking about the rear.
Where did you put these washers? If you put them on the end of the tbar to push out the spring plate, that is not what you want to do! The tbar does not position the spring plate. the tbar "floats betwen the splines in the spring plate and the inner splines of the tbar tube. The spring plate is positioned by the bushings. The rear bushing holds the spring plate off the body. If your spring plate is rubbing against the body then something is wrong - - The bushings are worn or - The ring welded to the tbar tube that holds the rear bushins is rusted away / gone. When all is working properly the adjuster bolts heads are very close to the body, perhaps 3 mm clearance or so.

If your plates are rubbing on the body, maybe the t-bars you received are too short/are for older 915 cars. I think the G50 cars have longer bars. Just off the top of my head. Although I think the G50 plates and bars have a different # of splines (more splines I think) so older bars shouldn't fit in the spring plates, no? I think I read this in the Performance Handbook.

Believe it or not, there were washers stuck in the grease on the end of the factory T-bars when I pulled them out of the car. There were two on the left side and one on the right. The T-Bars that I bought are correct for my year and are about a washer width longer than the stock T-Bars. This is a one owner car so I know the bars weren't replaced.
When I put the new T-Bars in the car (without the washers) the clearance of the adjusters to the body looked too close. I though about 1/4 inch of space would be better so I put one washer back on each T-Bar and re-inserted them.

I may have given you bad advice. I didn't see that you had the '87 with G50. My experience is with the 915 and its shorter tbars only.
G50 may well be different.

Sorry to say that I haven't taken mine apart yet. I'm waiting for my front bars so I can put the front suspension back up first before going to the back.
I don't see any spacing washers in the exploded view of the rear end diagram of the 87-up cars on the PET. Maybe microfiche is different, but that's at home. Drag John Walker in here to see what he knows about these washers. 89911 has an 89 (obviously) and just took apart an 87. See if he knows anything as well
