Exclamation Please Help me Figure This Out.

Hey Pelicans,

Unfortunately I didn't get to drive my 83 SC for most of the summer.
It doesn't want to start and when It does I have to hold the throttle so it doesn't die.
the other day I was trying to start the engine and nothing. Then for some reason I decided to take out the air filter and flip open (then close) the pop-off valve.
After doing that, The car started...And performed normally.

Any Ideas as to what it can be?
The SC is at a shop now. And any input would be very appreciated!

Thanks in Advance.
Dave

But how come when I opened the pop-of valve the car started right away?
You don't think it's air-box related?

You opened and closed the pop off valve (back fire valve)? Sometimes during a back fire the valve doesn't close completely the O ring may dislodge, opening and closing the valve may have seated the O ring.

Garage
Also check the valve is firmly seated in the airbox. Epoxy does tend to weaken over time. Reglue if any looseness.

One other thing to check on the pop-off valve--was it installed correctly? The hinge should be toward the rear of the car so that when the lip pops up, it doesn't hit the sloping underside of the air filter and get stuck.

Interesting, the hinge in toward the front, maybe thats the problem, I kinda doubt it though.
Have you guys heard of anyone having this problem?

It all started after I cleaned inside the airbox with some armerall...(dumb move, don't EVER do it)

The sticking flapper may not be your particular problem, but I can guarantee that if the hinge is facing the front of the car, the flapper can and will hang up in the open position due to the slope of the filter element. Take a close look at the wire mesh over the filter, just above the flapper. Is it dented or stretched? A sure sign that the flapper has hit there during a backfire.

BTW, the flapper on my 75 was installed incorrectly by the PO and all the above is from personal experience. As a precaution, I'd suggest a R/R of the pop-off valve to it's correct position.
