Replacing vinyl in gauge area
I am thinking about replacing the vinyl that surrounds the gauges.
Before I start pulling it apart and realising the job is bigger than Texas can someone please let me know exactly what needs to be removed to do it. The area I am most 'concerned' about is the dash top. Would this need removing completely or can I do it more easily than that? Thanks.

Are you talking about this switch? I have wondered what that is for. Mine is not connected (ie. wires cut).
I'm still hoping to get an answer as to what I need to remove to replace this vinyl. Do I need to completely remove the dash pad? ![]()

Mate, that knee pad is very easy to remove. There are about 3 maybe 4 x 8mm nuts fixing it in place. The kneepad has small threaded studs built into it that pass through the metal dash surround. Feel in behind with your fingers and you will find them all then use a 1/4 drive socket set to remove the nuts, I think you need a 6 or 8mm socket, not 10mm. It will then fall into your hands. Replacing the vinyl will take some skill, easier to find a 2nd hand item. Once the knee pad is out of the way you can remove the aluminium plate from around the light and hazard switch as well and recover that if needed, its stuck on with 2 sided tape but the ignition surround and hazard and light switch need to be removed. The ignition surround unscrews, the hazard will break unless you are very careful and the light switch knob unscrews as does the chrome retainer ring.

It occurs to me your red arrow is actually pointing at the mystery switch (not the knee pad, my bad) and you actually want to remove the dash or is it the vinyl around the guages? (my 70's version 911 only has painted steel where the guages mount) Pop the guages out and have a look, maybe its simply glued in place

Thanks. I wanted to find out out to replace the vinyl around the gauges. I figured I need to remove the surrround where the lights and hazard switch are. I just wanted to know if I need to remove the dash or can I get at it a bit easier than that.
The mystery switch...?. well it's still a mystery!!

the vinyl which is very well glued in place does go back under the edge of the dash cover. probably much easier to replace and remove the old glu by removing the dash cover. the gauges are easy to remove and the toggle switches pop out as well. just a very tedious process but not extremely difficult. i am only speaking of the vinyl around the gauges, not the lower dash and knee pads.
