lots of options based on power, low wt. parts, brakes, and suspension

wayner 09-07-2011 03:04 PM

Did I mention the receipts for new bilsteins, hollow bars, sway bars, adjustable spring plates etc?

used stock spring plates are adjustable

used stock later model torsion bars, etc. if you want to spend less money

wayner 09-07-2011 05:08 PM

Im not really concerned about spending money on hop up parts. The last two owners took care of that.

I just need to make sure that I am working with a solid tub, and time to put it together in the right direction.

per pg 1 of this thread you bolied it down to an earlier light car & long hood & you saved one...was it the right one...?? Only you can answer that...

From the growing pics of nice parts you got with the car, if you want the thread followers to suggest what to do, post up ALL of the parts you have & their condition...I believe you have a running engine & a trans with a bunch of wevo stuff...that is a GREAT start to any build = time & $$ saved...

Again, since this is YOUR Porsche, do what you want & don't change your direction unless it is not wise to do something ie it causes you to have to sell off parts a/o get different parts...but then again, this is YOUR car so do as you please...

Major costs to keep in mind on your budget, if you have one, are the following:
* paint @ $5-15k depends on level of quality you want & who does the work...
* interior @ $500 for bare felt carpet & no door panels or headliner & crappy seats to $2-4k if something special you want ie a certain long hood era sport seat could cost you $1-3k alone...
* fuchs & tires can be $2-4k easily...
* engine exhaust if SSI's & a nice muffler can be $1k+...
* a nice stereo can be $1k+...
......all of this easily adds up to $10k min...just an fyi...make a plan & go for it...
All in all its your $$ & time so plan, plan, plan & plan...the sooner it is on the road the sooner you can be enjoying it...

911 tweaks 09-07-2011 05:23 PM

if you are unsure about the solidness of the tub, get it checked out by someone who knows for sure = a well respected independent Porsche repair shop...
After the tub condition is verified, make the plan & enjoy the travels...
List all of what you have to get suggestions for car directions w/ what you have a/o minimaly what you will need to make your choice of style Porsche...

wayner 09-07-2011 05:25 PM

Oh ya, carpet set.

Seems to me I have one of those, like everything else, new in a box along with new headliner and new RS doors trimmed in leather. I really should inventory this stuff.

Seats remain a real question mark for the future. I want something sportier, but have been agonizing over full race vs vintage look..but that is a decision for another day off in the future.

wayner 09-07-2011 05:27 PM

What about THIS part Bob. Now that I've gotten brave with the flare, should I cut this part out?

Oops, never mind. Too late :)

Here is the plan then:

Whatever I do with this tub should be aligned with rendering it salvageable should someone want to take it through a full narrow body restoration one day (though that day may never come). I don't want to destroy it with my creating.

It needs 1/4s anyway, so whatever I want the existing ones to look like won't matter.

Meanwhile, I'll make it mine as I originally intended, and fight off the urges to get drawn off course, even though I find some of the terrific narrow bodied hot rods and concourse cars seducing.

I think it will be cheaper to hop this one up than to return it to stock, and , for the purists, one more long hood is kept from the crusher to live another day (even if it becomes tarted up for some time until a second rescue by someone with deeper pockets).

Bob, thanks for drawing me back to page 1, and your analytical approach.
I appreciate it.

I woke up with some clarity this morning.

I've put the cart before the horse in a few instances with this project.

Most of what I need came with the car which is the reason I even considered this tub. I have resisted the temptation to accumulate even more parts, but I did spend on a recovered dash and a few bits that I will need regardless of which direction this car goes...without getting the tub solid first.

From the rear door post forward I am absolutely certain that there no surprises. Much of it is new and there are no places to hide that I can't see. Rockers, to bumper. The rear is where the adventure will be (and yes, I checked the torsion tube, that was the first place I looked before buying).

I originally wanted a long hood RSR, but now what I realize I really want is two cars: a short wheel base narrow car, maybe R styling cues, and a satin black 935 like reaper's!
I can't keep working in fits and starts without a clear direction as I have been doing in my head while work continues, so am committing to this.

Since I can't have either of those two let alone both, I'm back to the long hood RSR as a one car compromise. (Did I just say out loud that a long hood RSR is a compromise?)

Great conclusion to date Wayner...!! = continue to salvage the "TUB" = the unibody = get it all sorted out rust ~ metal wise while you work on putting the parts list together to make many of us drool further with the great find & stash of parts you got with the car... :-)
I am also glad to hear some $$ sense...awesome = you realize how expensive these projects can become...
Basically 90% of what can be done to 911's is reversible = bolt on stuff...However, it is the for every $1 spent you will only get back 50-75 cents when you come time to sell as in how you I guess bought this car...
The real expensive remaining 10% of car mods that are costly to reverse are: welding or f glassing on rear flares that are not stk to that particular tub; cutting a hole in the front lid for a center gas fill; cutting holes in the tub to plumb oil cooler lines & oil coolers; welding in roll bars & door bars, welding in suspension beef up parts, add a MY 72' exterior oil door,ect...though these mods are very tempting to do, keep in mind these are reversible but one will probably have to re paint the car after removing & correcting the car back to original style the car was from the factory...
This is a journey...a dream for most of those whom embark on such...REALLY make sure you have a plan & watch the $$ & set a time line for completion...!! I hate to see projects get bailed on...I was told that 75% of resto projects are not completed...especially these days of economic uncertainty...(I started 3 of them only to bail due to the mushrooming cost & unable to afford spending "X" and only able to get 75% of X if & when I sold it...if $$ is not an issue with you, forget everything I have posted and let-r-rip-baby...but, I don't think that is the case here, otherwise you would of bought a running, maybe needing a few tid bits, or already completed long hood hotrod, right...maybe...??

A big part of the reason this car appealed to me (aside from the parts stash) goes back to my perhaps paranoid belief that I mentioned earlier regarding 3 types of cars:

-one that has to be taken apart
-one that is already apart and needs put back together
-one that has recently been put back together

The elusive fourth type (one that is solid and just needs to be driven) can be one of these three in disguise.

I'd rather know what I am facing, and even at that I am in for surprises I'm sure, ...but, given all that can be seen and has been done already, how bad can it be ;)

911 tweaks 09-08-2011 03:47 AM

if longhood RSR is the "compromise"...well...it all depends on how far you want to go...please find a thread by Tony making an RSR clone...he is in WA state...his handle is Wolverine I think...he can tell you about cost & what you will be in for if you are thinking of this or that on the build...
All in all be prepared to spend over and above what you pd for the car a good $15k min...paint... fuchs...suspension...probably a tweek or 2 on the motor...trans is probably ok but is dependent on how wild of a car you make...sport seats...interior...fenders...oil cooling system...930 brake system I guess...front & rear lids not what you currently have...I am sure I have missed a thing or 2 here...
Be careful here with the "WHILE I AM IN THERE" syndrome...it adds $$, but then again, this is your car & do as you wish...just set a committed to time line for completion & enjoy...
Bob

wayner 09-08-2011 04:01 AM

Good advice, particularly the "while you are in there" syndrome!

BTW, the car came with a new bolt in cage

Isn't it funny how those are the new RSR. The big oil cooler front ends are so yesterday :-).
