Steering wheel/column noise ?

Hi all, i'm getting a whining noise from the steering wheel-column area that is getting persistently louder the more I drive. Almost as if my car was equipped with power steering and the pump was going... Can this be the steering shaft ball bearing? Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thx.

Are you talking about a rotational sound? Any up/down side side movement?
easy enough to pull the wheel and try a little white lube if its just dry - dirty in there and not a worn bush-bearing.

Keep us posted.

You may have two issues:

Sound:
The Wiper Switch Contact may need cleaning and polishing as well as the ring on the steering wheel where it glides on. The edge of the ring needs to be emory clothed to round off the two edges. Run your finger along the edge, I bet you will feel sharp divets.

You see, over time and use as the steering wheel drives straight or frequent turns at the same corner, i.e. coming to the home stretch, the vibrations cause grooves on the ring and wiper contact creating a "SCRATCHY" sound or "WINING".

Take care as you re-tension the wiper contact, you do not want it too tight, it will acellerate wear on the contact or too loose where the horn and wiper stops working.

Wiper Contact:

Notice the shiny part? That is what needs to be polished, you can use a dremel with a polish wheel.

SLOP:
A little slop is inevitable but if it moves up and down and side to side, you may need to insert the 928 bearing sleeve or the Derlin Sleeve, either one is available here from our Host.

Take a video of the slop and post it.
