Shuts down on the exit ramp!

This is probably a CIS issue...............
Car starts well on cold start and warms up wells, but I cannot put the hand throtle down til I am at 140-160 on the temp guage. I will run the car on the highway (70+) when I can for several miles with no backfiring, good exceleration and then when I come off on a exit ramp the damn thing will die or hunt up and down on the tach. Its then I have to raise the hand throttle to keep the revs steady. I know that up and down hunting means too rich so I will adjust the mixture a click, nothing happens. Funny thing is that when I get to the first traffic light a block or two away and stop. I will lower the throttle and it sets in well at set rpm. What the @#$&%?

Points are fine, new plug wires, but I am always playing with the fuel mixture screw. Deceleration valve seems to work, new cold start valve, new fuel accumulator.............can dirty fuel cause this?
Why after high speed? Somethings not holding...neither is my patience!!!

HELP...................

Thanks
Bob

Hello

You still have the erly CIS with the special WUR setup.

First to check are the fuel pressures and then check for vacuum leaks ( including for a blown airbox )

Bob,

Not being familiar with your car, the problem sounds like it is has something with the engine warming up. What components are in operation during the warm up phase.

If the car starts ok while it's cold, then it's not a cold start problem because it starts right up. You say that you have to pull the choke up to keep it running. That means that it is running rich so, what component makes it run rich during the cold operation phase? Do you have an enrichment valve which would help keep it running while it's cold? Or, the component that controls the enrichment valve? Or, is there something that is effected by the engine warming up?

Maybe this info will help in trying to resolve your problem.

Thanks Steve...
I finally found my problem and a heads up to other CIS owners who may have the same difficulties.

It turned out that the mixture screw next to the fuel distibutor was not turning as I thought it was. All the time I was thinking I was making adjustments and turning that 3mm hex wrench, it was doing nothing. I had some junk down in that hole!!!!

It was not until I took the air cover off, manually held the bottom part of the sensor plate and forced that wrench down into the hole did I realize the problem. A small dental pick, some WD40 lube and the mixture screw turns better. Turned out I was way to rich......................a couple clicks to starboard and she is just fine.

Goes right down to idle speed and holds.

What a hassle..........

Regards
Bob

Thanks for the info!

Mine was doing that too. I fixed one vacuum leak, and it helped alot, but it still does it once in awhile. I'll take a look at the mixture.

This might be more info than needed, but never forget to check the fuel filter. Cheap fix and a clogged one can cause many of the issues you describe.
