carrera fuel injectors - inspecting/cleaning question

i read the bentley manual and it tells you to remove the electrical plugs from the injectors one by one to check that they are operating. (engine running, idle will drop)

is it worthwhile removing injectors to visually inspect them?

and then soak them in cleaner? i read one thread that suggested carb cleaner for this??

do i need to buy replacement o rings/seals before hand?

just wondered if it was good diy maintenance or best left to pro's.

I'm kinda curious about this myself. I have also heard the old, pull the injectors and get them to spray in a glass jar trick. Would this be possible on a 3.2? I've heard people speak of soft and hard lines to the injectors.

Not a bad idea to inspect your injectors in order to see what the tips/pintles look like. In the "What's Inside a 150,000 mile 3.2" thread (posted recently), Tony said that his injectors were caked-up pretty heavily with black carbon-like crud. When I removed mine (64K mi.) a few had some build-up around the plastic caps. Not too bad. I imagine the situation largely depends on fuel quality.

The fuel rails are kinda tough to get off the injectors. The rails are bolted to the intake manifold and hold the injectors in place. Remove the bolts and pull straight. The o-rings do a pretty good job of keeping the injectors sealed within the rail. Gotta pull pretty hard. Don't be cheap. Replace the o-rings if you open up the rails to look at the injectors. The Porsche part kit includes o-rings, cap and spacers but you only use the o-rings. You need 6 kits at about $6 ea. It's a DYI job.

Warren recommends soaking them in Berryman B12 Chemtool (I know PepBoyZ carries it) and it helps even more to do it in an ultrasonic cleaner. I think you can find the ultrasonic cleaner unit at a store that sells drafting supplies. We have a couple old ones at the office, used when the fellas used to draw plans by hand (still do occasionally) with ink pens. Get the kind with a stainless bowl.

great thanks, so it is at least worthwhile to inspect them. i'll get some o rings and then check them out.

i'll probably soak them in carb cleaner since i've already bought it and don't have access to the stuff you mentioned!!!
