Larger Tires or Lower Car

I have a 76 Targa with 16x7 205/50-16 tires on all four corners. The tires are over ten years old with 5k miles and I don't trust them any more.

Looking at the car it looks like I could go to 225/50/-16 on all four. Will they fit? or should I stick with the 205/50/16 and lower the car?

I think 225 would be too wide for those rims.

Your car looks like it is sitting pretty high, so why not lower it some?

With those wheels I would not go wider. I would definitely replace 10 year old tires!! Nice looking car! That's a great yellow! Lower it to about an inch of 'air' over the rear tires, about 1.5" front. Will ride great.

The pre-78 cars without the SC/Carrera flares have a tough time fitting 225/50 tires on the rear without cranking in more negative rear camber and rolling the fender lips. Same goes for the front.

You should definitely dump the current tires just from a look standpoint! But go with a 205/55 tire and that will fatten up the sidewall to close the gap between the top of the tire and the fender

205-55 -16 on a 6X16 was a std front option on SC's
I had similar delima on my 71 running 6 x 16 on all 4 corners with 205-55 16 same issue old untrustworthy tires, wanted MORE TIRE!!!
Was pretty sure a 225 would not fit under the 71 stock.

Dunlop does the DZ 101 in a 215-50 16 fit nicely very grippy only about 250 mi on them but very happy so far.
Tire rack has the specs, I bought local price was not much different and happy to give the local guy the business.

Regards

Will post a pick later tonight

Yes I would like to see a pic of your car with 215/50's. I am reluctant to lower the car due to the huge RR tracks that I nearly clear now.

FYI, you can run 225/50's in the rear if you find yourself a set of 911R 15x7's or a set of Revolution 15x7's, which have the "R" offset.

I just had my 75 Targa lowered

It's a really tight fit in the rear with 215/60/R15 tires now. I had it aligned and corner balanced as well. I'm running 195/60/R15 in the front.

Here are a couple pics of the DZ 101 215-50 x16, they have a very predominate rim protector at the bead which I think also helps the sidewall and in my case with 6 x 16 wheels aids the tread patch.
Tires are very sticky and stable, although only about 250 mi on them all but about 20 mi were on great mountain roads, 2 lane twisties.
At this point I give them 2 thumbs way up!!

Regards

yea I know I need to send the wheels off to Al Reed to polish like the 66 (also 6x16) early cars dont need black out!!

Thanks for the pics. The rim protector is great.. I am going to order a set from my local tire dealer. He matches Tire rack's prices..

I think you will be happy and they will fit.
I am running 4mm spacers as shown, had 8mm with the 205-55's
I laser cut some 2mm spacers and use them to play around with filling out the wheel wells.

Let us know what you think after you get them, I think you will be happy!!

I took your Advise and got the Dunlaps... 215/50-16 . I think they look great and the ride is much better than the old dry rot tires I had.

Thanks for your Help

Looks better. However the front is still very high. Looks like you'll have to lower the front via the adjusters & possibly have to re-index them on the torsion bars. Don't worry, not hard to do
