H4/H5 question
I am shopping for H4 trim rings in body color that go over the chrome. Somone has a set for me but each ring has the two black plugs ala H5's? He said they are H4 rings. Does anyone know if the H4 and H5 trim ring is the same piece with the exception of the holes, and secondly, when did Porsche switch to the H5 unit. I will be running H4's in my 86 Turbo, but if H5's were correct for 86, then I could run those trim rings with the H4, lights. Maybe they made H4 rings with holes also? Thanks for any help.....

H4 and H5 look the same in terms of the shape of the glass lens. But are actually put together with completely different pieces behind that lens.
H4 trim rings do not have the plugs. However I never tried to put my H5 rings over the H4 housings. But I don't think they will work. This is because the H5 ring is similar to the H4 chrome ring, in that is it shaped to connect with the upper lip on the headlight/fender bucket and screw into the threaded tab on the bottom of the bucket. The H4 ring has to fit flush over the chrome ring and it screws into a special screw with a female hole Porsche switched to the H5 in 1987 and carried it through 1994. After that the 993 came along with much better lights.

What Kevin said - the H5 "ring" would replace, if anything, the part of the H4 bucket assembly that the paintable H4 trim rings are designed to cover. It's possible the H5 ring is bigger - I didn't notice so much of a "step" in my H5's before I removed them and replaced them with H4's. And then decided I needed the trim ring, even though I got the painted black H4's and the body color is also black...
Used paintable H4 trim rings are rare in the US (because they were never standard and many folks don't buy them when they buy the H4's) - and they're expensive new, although they're pretty common in Europe, where they fitted the H4's standard. Maybe an on-line breaker in Europe would be a cheap(er) source? I bought mine on-line from a breaker in the UK.

Steve,
Give me a call when you have some free time and I'll tell you all about the lights. Cheers, Jeff |

There's not a common part between H4 and H5 lights, including the painted trim rings.
