Rear lights cracking - rear view mirror malfunction

So I needed to share my Porsche Dealer story. I bought a 2006 997S from a dealer in houston which sold me the car and promoted heavily the super advantage of buying that particular car because it was Porsche certified and had a 2 year extended warranty. Off course i paid a premium for the car. Why do I say i paid a premium because i could have bought the same car else were for 5K less probably, but the idea of an extended warranty on an expensive car was appealing and the sales rep told me all the advantages that i had versus buying it from an individual.

Ok so I went to my nearest Porsche dealer 4 hours away from my city so they could take a look at my tail lights which are cracking from the inside and my self dimming feature of my rear view mirror which failed leaving the appearance of a cracked mirror.

The rep at the Dealer went inside to talk to who knows who to come back a little while later and expressed that these items where accessories and were not covered under warranty. Just Great was my first thought. Since when are tail lights and rear view mirrors accessories. If they are accessories as explained by the dealer can I purchase a 997 without these items. Can i order one from germany without these accessories?????

We pay top dollars for these vehicles and their upkeep for a company like Porsche to rely on fine print to leave stuff out of their should be covered items. It is not like I paid two dollars for this extended warranty and the fact that they would issue a certified car with an extended warranty from the manufacturer and not cover items like these is just unacceptable.

Unfortunately that is their policy and marketing strategy to get our money, but word gets out and for sure their are other fine sports cars on the market. I do own two BMW and during my ownership the service from BMW has being incredible. One of them was purchased used with an extended warranty also and after a month of ownership i lifted the car to inspect it I found out a few odds and ends that should have been taken care of during their certification. Well what would you know that the dealer told me not to worry about it that they would take care of these issues and from their on I bought my wife a BMW and dealer service is excellent.

I never thought that a company like Porsche would promote warranties, charge the kind of money they do, to only deny coverage on items that are clearly not accessories. Unacceptable, just plain unacceptable.

Shame on you PORSCHE, SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear you have any issues with your car.

Most every extended warranty I have ever seen or bought was very specific about what it covered. Most of the time it was just drivetrain components and such were never covered. I don't how explicit your warranty/documentation is/was, but I tend to avoid extended warranties for that specific reason. Most of the the items covered by the warranty are items that will outlast the warranty, so it is nothing more than a money maker for the dealer and/or warranty company.

I hope you can work everything out and have your car back to the way it should be and the way you want it soon.

Thanks for your comments. I just went to Momentum Porsche website and read whats covered and whats not and yes it mentions something of accessories not covered. Nothing else noted there has anything to do with my items. Not covered are accessories, but my question stands...since when are tail lights and rear view mirrors accessories.

I think I am paying the dealer a visit tomorrow again because i would like that explained by a manager.

Thanks again for your words

Re-read your warranty and question the dealer on what you don't understand and what isn't covered.

I bought a used 4WD Suburban with a warranty years ago and the transfer case broke. The warranty didn't cover the repair. I re-read the warranty and it was useless. A total scam....I cancelled the warranty and they refunded my money..

I would speak with the GM of the dealership and PCNA customer relations. I would make a big stink about it. That is why I bought a 40 year old porsche after my 993.

OK GUYS...Guess what...I searched through my paper work when i bought the car and found the booklet that says what is covered and what is not. basically it covers any parts that fails under normal use and it does have quite a few things not covered in the "not covered items under this warranty section" mon of which point out to my two items.

The dealer in albuquerque or better said the person that gave me his uneducated opinion is not well informed. Tomorrow I will be at the dealer first thing in the morning and will ask to talk to the service manager right off the bat.

To be continued...read on tomorrow.....

Sometimes you really have to be relentless if you want something done from a dealer ... went through that with Ford for my F150 and ended up taking the matter up directly with Ford Canada who eventually gave my dealer a good hand spanking and they had no other choice but to honor my claim !

Keep us posted !

Cheers !

this is an update and not a very good one for that matter. dealer called today basically wanting more info from me. service manager said that at this point he was not saying my parts were or were not covered that he needed to contact porsche. First issue with porsche and already they show a bad side.....unacceptable. even called porsche north america and when you hear them say about we are opening a case or write your case number down it cannot be good.

Sorry guys i really like my 997 for all it is but porsche service and/or policy towards guarantees make me want to walk in my BMW dealer right now and trade it in for an M3. BMW service in my city has been awesome to say the least....really no exaggeration. i forget or get confused if with this problem i am talking about a Hyundai or do I really have a Porsche in my garage. Is this what we are supposed to put up with from Porsche because it is a privilege to drive one. Is that what I am hearing from Porsche????

Again I don't know what to think many but many years went by before I had the financials right to buy a car that only a few years back I could only dream about and then this is what we get from Porsche. Maybe its an isolated case I don't know but it sure doesn't feel right on this end.

later guys

OK so I got a call from Porsche North America and the rep started the conversation very nicely (in preparation for what was coming to me i guess) and proceeded to tell me that my rear view mirrors would be covered by Porsche and unfortunately the tail lights which are cracking from the inside were not due to the fact that they consider that normal wear and tear. So let me get this straight.....a part fails and under Porsches policy its is considered normal wear and tear. Will engine break down be considered normal wear and tear also eventually. I am very disappointed to say the least. So disappointed that I am seriously considering getting out of the Porsche world. Normal wear and tear and they even said it was like brakes and tires. tail lights are supposed to crack from the inside and i suppose as tires and breaks we should replace them every so many miles. this is an issue to take up with the law, but my opinion is that I don't belong were I am not welcomed and thats exactly what I am hearing from Porsche. All the prestige of the brand goes right down the drain.

I hope I am the only one having these types of issues, but just in case there are more out there I hope to hear from you.

Try calling some other Porsche dealers (in other states perhaps) and ask them to give you a few examples of typical wear and tear items. Keep it friendly. Ask them if tail lights would be covered.
