Porsche Centre Console - New Uses

I have a Black 1985 911 with a centre console that has an almost perfect empty square gap in it. Just above that gap is the central locking switch.

I was wondering whether anyone had found something that could neatly be slotted into this gap - I was thinking particularly that a GPS unit would work there wonderfully.

Does anyone know of one?

I am aware of the classic porsche GPS unit that one can slot into the stereo space - but I have already splashed out on a DEH - R-88-ii HU and amp so that's taken.

I know that once it probably would have contained tapes - what can I put in it now?

Console.....

I deleted the console in my SC when I changed over to an RS style interior. I made a bracket that fits where the ashtray used to be to hold the a/c controls.

Not a mod... not a patch... at least on an early SC... that's exactly what I saw when I took out the console, which the PO had added.

My earlier car, that never had a console, looked exactly like that.

It came from the factory like that.

tcar - that was it - you didn't need to cover up any holes or anything?

I'm not sure I want to take it out it has the central locking switch in the middle of it so obviously has power.

I was hoping that someone might say - yep there is a sweet GPS unit you could just drop in down there... maybe there isn't?

Maybe it would be a good place to mount a tom tom or something - in fact I'm going to go and measure it - I might be able to get something like this in there...

GPS solved - sweet!

...may be of interest, this is part of a Rennaire AC install, seemed logical and flows well.

Install is still in progress, hence the loose wiring and stuff.

Wow, that really is a perfect fit.

Cool - in more senses than one.

Great install.

Anybody with any other ideas? I'm going to check the size this evening to see whether this tom tom GPS idea is a flyer.

I've had a couple of '84 911's and this '86 cabrio. I never did like the look of the stock console. Seemed to me like Porsche finished the car and decided they needed a "modern" looking console and they came up with something that looks to me like an add-on abortion.

So when we replaced the entire carpeting in the '86 it was an excellent opportunity to try getting rid of the stock console. Actually not too difficult except for moving the emergency flasher into the glove box and it turned out great.

Yeah, the shifter know is on upside down. Just feels better to me that way!

I hate to admit it - but sc_rufctr - I sort of like that white interior 80's throwback... It is just soooo 80s Plus, when you dropped the coke - it would just blend in...

So I have found a GPS Screen that fits and have fabricated a surround for it (which still needs a little work). It is here:

What do you think?

Interesting thread........and may be quite timely, for me.

I've an '89 SA Edition, that has "that" console in it. No open areas, mind you,..but a monstrous 5 disc, CD holder (storage only). Although I've had this console out before while installing new shift related bushing, o-rings and ball cup, I never paid attention to the CD holder section's mounting within the console.

My interest (now) is to remove the holder,..install an AC vent, powered by the (removed) bowtie feed,..and install some type of blank plates in the remaining open space (where can one get this type of blank plate materials, BTW). I've see some offered vendor mods that make use of adding a vent between the ashtray and top of the console...I can ASSURE you, there's no such room to do so in an '89,..so: the idea.....just need to source the parts (blanks and AC vent....) ideas?

BEST!

Hi, I am the guy who did the two vents in the console....I just used the end vents from the later cars (post '85) and fabricated a little bit of sheet metal to hold them. They are desiged to "click" through the dash so they work on this application as well. I used Nostalgic Air parts to make up a bigger Y off of the evaporator vent, ducted most of the air to the console vents thinking they would now have the bigger area. Each vent coult take about a 2 or 2 1/2 inch flexible hose and so a single vent is a possibility to easily tie to the bowtie vent (which I did not have). Basically the "Inner" console serves as a plenum that the two vents go into...

D.
