Starter makes a grinding sound... now I know why.
Just got this pic from my wrench. It's about what I expected. Hopefully the upgrade part will last a bit longer (than 15 years).
I think I could fix it with JB Weld and a hand file

Holy crap! Did a deaf person previously own your car?!
If nothing else, at least you'll now have the updated ring gear for our cars. Updated because of engagement problems- tech. note in 74-89 911 Parts Reference. Best wishes for your updates and top end rebuild!

Believe me, I knew something was wrong. But since I was planning a drop and replacement there was nothing else to do but grind away.
About 1 of every 3 starts was LOUD. GREEEEAAACH!
