wd40 vs penetrating oil, a big difference?

I'm about to remove my stock muffler and swap to a bursch
sport muffler. I tried the bolts today and they are frozen.
I've got some WD-40 around the house that I'll try. If that
doesn't do the trick is a penetrating oil worth trying? Is it
that much better than WD-40 or just about the same?

WD40 is not a lubricant.
WD = Water displacement
Use the penetrating oil.

Yep, the penetrating oils are different; WD-40 is a water dispersant not a penetrating oil or a good long term lubricant as it drys out to become "gummy". Aero Kroil or PB blaster are relatively inexpensive and readily available. Jim

Kroil is now available on the Interenet - do a Google search.

You'd think the Wurth pen. oil would be very good, but I have no experience with it. Pelican might have that.

one thing WD-40 does do is eat rust. I use both depending on situation....

WD 40 is great to spray in a distributor that is plagued with condensation. WD40 is not a lubricant, if you ever want to ruin an alternator in about a day, spray some WD40 on the bearings.

WD 40 not only displaces water but it also displaces whatever lubricants are there too.

I agree, PB Blaster is smelly stuff, but inexpensive. If you garage is attached to your home I would use the Aero Kroil. It smells like Pine Sol, but is more spendy than the PB Blaster.

Can I find AeroKroil at a retail store (e.g. Home Depot, Autozone), or must it be purchased online?

Only three things of this sort work:
- Kroil
- PB blaster
- Wurth Rost Off!

BTW...you're gonna need "heat"...like cherry red ......for your project
oxy/acetylene....

Besides the oils, if you can't get the nuts off, the Sear "Bolt Out" sockets as advertised on TV by Bob Veila, really do work at getting off rounded nuts. They're sockets with internal biting teeth. You'll need new nuts/bolts, but they really do work.

Wil-
Forgive my ignorance, but can you be more specific?
If you mean that I'm gonna have to "cut"
it out with a torch... I hope you're wrong!

never seen Kroil in a retail store

pb blaster stinks incredibly

the heat breaks corrosion loose (or burns it to carbon & trace elements) -- unfortunately it also messes up the temper of all the metals involved

wd40 might help get a nut off if not stuck much, i'd just keep a pen. oil on hand tho.

There some products on the market that are private labeled and out perform water displacement and penetrating oils combined. I have used every brand of both and there is no comparison to the products sold by WURTH and Kimball Midwest. The trouble is finding someone to purchase them through.

There a guy on YouTube that tests all kind of oils, chemicals, lubes, greases etc. He is independent and is not paid or supported by any company. He does extensive real world testing usually with the top 10 or so best known brands of whatever he is looking at.

The one I remember best was when he tested penetrating oils. The winner surprised me. I use it almost exclusively now for breaking loose tough nuts and bolts. Found it:

If oils/heat fails - air chisel to cut the nut then replace with a new one.

At the shop, time is money - ;>)

So disappointing to see AeroKroil finish last, been told for years how great this stuff is. This thread is 20 years old.
