Transmission or clutch problem,89 911

Hey guys,

Just got home from a two day track event and on my last session when i tried to downshift from fourth to third my shifter locked up in the neutral position ...
I managed to coast off the track in a safe position and the car would simply not shift anymore.
After turning off the engine i managed to get it in reverse then second gear which i used to get back to the paddock area after restarting the car.

Eventually the shifter managed to go through all the gears with the car off but if i push in the clutch when in first gear and start the car it lurches forward even with the clutch fully depressed ...
There was a burnt rubber smell when i got to the paddocks and i'm just wondering if it's my 22 year old original clutch that finally gave up after 15 aggressive track days this season ???

I was planning on doing an engine drop over the Winter but i still have a few more track weekends before putting my car away.
Hoping for an easy fix but i won't hold my breath ...

Does anybody have any suggestions where to start looking ?

Drove home with my buddie's 996 C4S while we put my car on his trailer,i have to admit that 320 stock horsepower and the short shifter throw is pretty nice ... lol

Cheers !
Phil

I fixed one for a friend that would grind when trying to put it into gear with the clutch pushed in (fine when not running) ended up being the PP was cracked.

It sounds like a clutch-related problem. Only an engine drop will tell the story, but the rubber hub of the disc probably failed.

Peter,

That's what in was thinking as well but is there a way to diagnose this without doing an engine drop first ?

I'm not intimidated by my first engine drop, just wasn't in the immediate plans ...

Cheers !
