Porsche Crest Row???

I need to ask you knowlegable pro's out there something about my car.

I have a 1988 Carrera 3.2 that is a Japanese model. I have never known if my car is truly considered a RoW car simply because it is not a North American model, or because it has the higher HP engine (which I'm still not sure if mine does).
My belief from research is that the car has the North American engine (217HP), but has some aspects that are of Euro spec. (i.e. the rear porsche reflector, side marker signal lights, etc). I'm confused! I have several books on the older Carrera's and one says it should have the higher HP engine, and the other doesn't. Nor did my car come with an owner's manual.

If someone can confirm whether my car is considered a RoW, and what engine this car would have in it.

What is the motor type number on the motor by the side of the cooling fan?

Should be something like 930/21 if it is a USA spec motor.

The engine used on Japanese 3.2 Carreras varied by year.

For 1988 all Japanese manual trans engines were the cat equipped 930/25 217hp, the same as used on US cars. Don't confuse engine specs w/ chassis specs, they are controlled by different agencies.

The car is a left hand drive. I heard that having a left hand drive in Japan (where they drive on the left), is a bit of a novelty. (like Japanese eating pizza!)

Same reason as in Ireland, better selection of well maintained cars with service history at reasonable prices. Takes a bit of getting used to though, especially for front seat passengers. I'm becoming accustomed to driving with my left mirror in the hedges while my OH screams about crossing into oncoming traffic

Nope. Same back seat as other 911 3.2's have. Smooth supple leather.

If it is a left hand-drive car, it may not be an actual Japanese-spec car. If you'll post the VIN number and engine type number and serial number, we can probably figure out what it is.

The VIN # is WP0ZZZ91ZJS109882
The engine number is 64I05453

Now, as far as the serial # goes, is it not the same as the VIN#?
Hope these numbers help. Looking forward to hearing the feedback as to exactly what kind of car I have.

Your car is a ROW having the ZZZ in the VIN number. Check here for VIN numbers 1988 http://www.911specs.net/VIN87s911.htm
Your car is 4th down in the 1988 list states a 217hp motor and is one of 430 built.
BTW your motor is a 930/25 type.

That chassis number shows to be for a Japan spec coupe. You might double check the engine number and see if it is actually 64J05453. The I in the third position isn't correct.

The engine is the same as the US spec engine for that year.

Thank you very much for your assistance in helping me to finally find out what kind of 911 I really have! I looked everywhere online for a website like the one you attached the link for, but couldn't find one.
Last question...do you think that the 217hp engine will revert back to somewhere close to the 231hp range if the catalytic converter is removed and a performance exhaust (in my case, a Fabspeed) is used? Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

I'll double check the third character on the engine number. It might just be a "J" and not an "I".

Comes close.

I added a cat bypass pipe and 911Chips.com chip and pulled 215-217 HP to the rear wheels on a dyno that is supposed to run low (ya right). That is 250+FWHP.

If you do put a sport muffler on it a friend w the same motor, chip, dyno, and day pulled about 7RWHP than I. The only real difference was a Bursh sport muffler.

With or w/o a chip 911's respond well to exhaust changes. The factory seems to have set to run rich under WOT. Freeing up the exhaust makes it easer to breath and puts us usually at a more favorable air fuel ratio.

If you want to confirm you motor there is a motor type number on the horizontal case surface behind the vertical motor serial number. It can be hard to see but it is there. It will be that number like 911/25. Wiping the surface and using a small magnifying glass helps.

Those questions I will leave to the other experts I cannot comment on this apart from to say any exhaust mod will free up more horses..

Do you have the correct SW chip?

If you told Steve you had a euro car you may have received a chip to work w a higher compression motor and you would be leaving HP on the table.
