Fabspeed exhaust, cat bypass and your input
I recently have got the Porsche bug after buying my neighbor's 1985 Targa. Cosmetically it was in very good to good condition. Motor and mechanics were another story. After about $13k to have New Mexico's best Porsche mechanic rebuild the motor and address other issues, I'm ready to do some mods myself. I bought it for $1k and now it runs like a Porsche should.
I want to get another couple HP out of it and more importantly make it sound good. I'm strongly considering Fabspeed's 911 European Pre-Muffler Catbypass Pipes. For one, it'll cost me under $400 and two, I can do it myself. My question is does anyone have any input on this product for the install and performance? This product takes the cat out and replaces it with a "muffler". Fabspeed Motorsports: Porsche 911 Carrera My other question deals with the O2 sensor. How hard is it to remove? Any special tools needed? Does it need to be cleaned and if so, with what? And when reinstalling, do the threads need to be lubricated with anything? I've head yes. The cat bypass is a good choice although you should check your local laws on mods and legality of them. Fabspeed makes good products but we have a Pelican,(Rarly8)aka Brian, that builds exhaust systems that are as good if not better. Plus you support a fellow enthusiast. His parts are available in the Pelican catalog under M&K.Pelican Parts.com - M&K Exhaust Mufflers The 02 sensor is located towards the rear of your catalytic converter. You should use a socket with a cutout for the wires to remove itand remove it only when the exhaust is stone cold. I believe most new ones come with anti-sieze compound on the threads. There isn't a specific timeframe for replacement but if you think it's original or don't know, it won't hurt anything to replace it. Hope this helps. |

Hi, I have Fabspeed's European Catbypass installed on my '86 911. It was installed at a neighborhood speed shop. They reused my O2 sensor and screwed it into the bypass pipe. The bypass sounds great, not loud while cruising, but aggressive when you floor it.
I also purchased a Steve Wong 911 chip after reading numerous post about this product. This is another affordable but effective mod that should add some extra horses. Oh haha's advice is the best regarding O2 sensor. I unplug the wire and use the box end of a good quality metric wrench. I have used a lead hammer on the wrench to bust it loose but don't if you can do it by hand. I have a pic of the inside muffler if you are interested. Just some mild baffling. |
I have a Fabspeed Exhaust with cat bypass in my 3.2 powered '82 SC. It sounds great! I'm very happy with it...so I recommend it highly..

I also have a Fab Speed Muffler with cat by-pass. Came with the car, 82 911SC. Just be aware your neighbors from some distance will be aware of arrival and departure. Good Luck, Tom

Combine the M&K pre muffler (because of the preferable 02 sensor location) W/the Fabspeed Muffler and add custom made tips; the Fabspeed tips don't match the era of the car!!

There is a lot of heat given off by the cat bypass and like mine there is no heat deflector like there is on the stock cat. Have you given any thought to wrapping a portion of the by pass with heat wrap? Is there any benefits or negatives to doing this?
