Thanks Adam. There is another clip in the same gallery of a 911 at a DE at Lime Rock that ends up on it roof. Be sure to turn the audio on to hear the drivers reaction when the car comes to a stop.

URY or Adam,
I need computer advice. I hit your links, get connected to AOL Media player, then nothing happens. For some reason I just cant get any videos to work. The machine is new, but it is only connected with a modem and telephone line, is this the problem? Also, if you think I can get it to work, can you guys send the link to the video of that 911 at Limerock at DE? Thanks JoeF |

Ok, JoeF, I'm assuming you're using a Windows-based PC. It will take a long while to view these videos using a dialup connection, but the connection type isn't what's causing your problem.
Looks like the AOL Media player is configured as your default player. Right click on the link above and select "Save Target As" and put it somewhere you'll be easily able to get it again. Then, once it's saved, goto the directory it's in and again, right click on it. Select "Open With" and then select "Choose Program", use the file browser to select: C:/program files/windows media player/mplayer2.exe. There will be a little checkbox allowing you to force Windows to use this player with all file formats ending in *.mpg, I think it says "Always open this file type with MPLAYER2?" Good Luck! It'll take a while.

I think that is a Mercedes 16V doing the rollover and play dead trick. http://www.vintagebus.com/cgi-bin/gallery-search.cgi?string=cat%3Dvideo One of the Docs that I work with has a C32 and another an E55. I have been gently urging them to go to a DE with me in May at Heartland Park, Topeka KS. The doc with the C32 is Gung-ho and really wants to take the car out. The other with the E55 doesnt want to hurt his $78,000 car. They unfortunately saw that video and were quite worried and it set me back in my urging, but I think I have them calmed down. So, in May we will have a caravan in may of a C32, E55, and my true competition, another docs M3 and myself (euro SC). I have not quite convinced another doc to bring out her Lincoln LS, but it should be interesting too. The funny thing is, I have the cheapest (to buy) of all the cars, but I will have the most fun! The car that flips onto its roof at Lime Rock, while chasing down the 911, is a Subaru Legacy.

I was trying to figure out what kind of car that was. I knew it wasn't a Porsche. That's what he gets for trying to hang with the 911. Pretty cool!

Agreed Lee.....we looked at it over and over and couldn't figure out what it was....we went by the little triangle in the middle of the dash and assumed it was a Mercedes. Never been in a Legacy (and don't necessarily want to) so you could be right Adam. God, I feel that guys pain! I just can't imagine the thoughts and feelings going through his head!! As for the DONUT boy....I would be seriously pissed if one of my boys were doing that with my car, though all three of them have a 914 coming when they are "of age". It is an alterior motive seeing as how they can hardly get outta their own way, let alone doing a smokin, blazin donut! They all have their colors picked out and which car they have "dibs" on. All that I ask of them is that they help/ do the restorations. We'll see! I learned to drive in my dads 78 silver anniversary vette and I cannot tell a lie, I did a few burnies and donuts....damn how karma works... God spanked me with 3 BOYS! Now I'm depressed! Brian

In the rollover, what did the guy do wrong? Is he coming in with too much speed, has he touched the brakes at the wrong time, or taken his foot off/on the gas at the wrong time? Could he have done anything to avoid the rollover once the was spinning?
Feeling nauseous right now Cheers Mark |

Well, again, he was trying to follow a 911 on the track in a Subaru. I think when this came up on the Rennlist email list months back someone said something about going over a rise and getting light, but I can't remember for sure.
The guy doing the burnouts needs to be hung or castrated or something equally bad. Somewhere around is a video of a Viper loosing his brakes at the end of a straight and going straight off a corner, it's ugly, it's in-car, so at the end all you see is hood, trees, and a cord dangling past the camera indicating the car is sitting on it's side or something. If you want a site with tons of videos, some interesting, some not, try here Go to the "movies" section.

Preface: I wouldn't judge anybody's driving other than my own, we've all made mistakes and much better drivers than I have hit the wall, even been killed at LRP. So ANALYSIS without judgment:
It's interesting that he begins to roll on the uphill at LRP. You see the 911 tap his brakes at the end of the straight and then gradually turn in and apex about 1 foot off the "turtles"- whereas the Subaru driver appears to be turning-in much earlier, and then there's some heavy vibration, almost like he's running over the turtles (right at 32 sec on the clip). This would upset the suspension for sure. The driver senses the tail coming around and slowly begins to feed in opposite lock but by that point the car is sideways and Mr. Newton has taken over. You want to aim for the left side of the track as you crest the uphill, right? So it's probably a good idea to apex early there and then unwind the wheel and let momentum carry you all the way to the left edge of the uphill. My guess is that the radius for the corner was not large enough and there may have been a suspension upset at the apex. Gotta hand it to the owner, he's confident enough to put this clip on the web. Glad he wasn't hurt. Check http://www.limerock.com/common/images/map_large.jpg for the map of LRP.

Lime Rock Rollover
Hoping to learn from another's mistake, I watched this several times. I'm assuming this is a Subaru Legacy as reported above, and AWD. I noticed that the tail seems to rotate three times in the first turn, and two more rotations in the second turn. Watching the track and the steering wheel together, he seems to be counter-steering each time as the tail comes around. This seems atypical for a front-engine AWD car. In the fateful turn, the car seems to go into oversteer, then porpoise twice before leaving the track. To counteract the normal understeer, maybe the suspension setup had been changed significantly, stiff back end and soft front? What do you all think?
Listen to his commentary. As the clip starts, he makes a comment about coming in too hot. After shifting before the fateful corner, he makes another comment about "keep screwing up fourth." I agree, it looks like he may have turned in too early. Easy to arm-chair analyze, but with AWD, maybe a planted throttle and counter-steer might have kept the back end in back. What do you think?
