questions about options on early cars

Hi all.

My Certificate of Authenticity has the following options listed:

optional equipment:
US equipment
Comfort Package
Manual Antenna with speaker and noise suppression
Tinted winshield, side and rear window

My car has Air conditioning in the cabin and all lines on the passenger side of the car running rear to front. I am missing the compressor.

My question is was Air a "US equipment" item ? The COA could have errors in it but everything else seems correct.

Thanks for any clarification!

Reg

Question not sure

My COA has the same listing as yours except the speaker. My S did not come with air conditioning. I would assume that the equipment packages would have been the same arcoss the T,E,S. I guess that doen't really help so I hope someone more familar with what is in those packages chimes in.

Air conditioning was a dealer-installed option in 1970, therefore would not appear on factory certificate.

As I understand it, there were two kinds of air conditioning available on the early cars. Factory air came with a seperate underdash unit that was not integrated with the kneepads, and front and rear condensers. Dealer-installed air conditioning utilized a replacement piece for the kneepads that offered slightly larger vents. I think the condenser arrangement was different as well. In the US, the dealerinstalled AC is very common.

Factory-installed AC was supposed to come with an oil cooler, at least in the 72-73 model years, but there are apparently a lot of exceptions to this out there, too.

Thanks for the info guys!

Raynald , thank you for your generous offer! My car actually was delivered new in Montreal from what I know, and it was tangerine colour originally.

I will take a digital image of the A/C unit possibly tomorrow or Saturday and post it here for you all to see. After all, nothing much better to do as we have been blasted with one (hopefully last) blast of winter.

Regards,

Reg

Thats my system. would it be the dealer installed option type, or some other aftermarket unit?

Thanks!

And a special MERCI to Raynald!

As it's been explained to me, that's dealer-installed.

Oddly, it looks more integrated than what the factory offered.

I think that you are right about there being dealer and factory installed A/C, Jack, seems like it would be other way around on knee bolsters, but his photo and cardex prove your explanation. At any rate, dealer-installed was most likely supplied by factory thru parts dept.
