Can I fit an '84 Exhaust on an SC?

Hi again,

Purchased an 82 SC with a dodgy exhaust setup. Lots of noise but no way it will pass any registration test. Picked up an exhaust from an '86 911 and wondering if there any gotchas in fitting it. From what I have found they seem to be interchangeable but I have a feeling I am being naive.
This will be my "weekend" job this week

Geoff

+1

Soak the bolts/nuts starting now in penetrating oil. I would go ahead and purchase new stanless steel hardware for the "new" exhaust as you'll most likely butcher up the existing stuff.

The studs on the cylinder heads are shorter in the SC. Gaskets are also different. You should use the proper ones for that engine (3.2).

Also some clamps are different but nothing serious...

If your a USA can, not euro, you have the right length studs for the Carrera hesat boxes.
What you do need to do is knock out the head insert of the Carrera because it will keep the heat box from mating the SC head.
The insert is held in place with 3 spot welds. Using a hammer or air chisel will take short work of the 3 welds.

Geoff,

just curious where you're located. I have a full SC exhaust (with good cat) that was on my Carrera that has bee in my basement for 6 six years since I acquired a B&B. Welll, except for every two years at emissions time, but now I'm grandfathered, so it's just collecting dust.

If you're anywhere near the St. Louis area, I'd be interested in a straight-up swap.

the carrera muffler will basically fit, but there is no lip to secure it onto the SC muffler hanger. it has a depression in the center to clear the larger carrera mount console.

FYI, I soaked mine with little luck. Simlpy used a cut off wheel on the dremel to remove old hardware. As stated, new stainless should go in.
