OK to use a TORX 55 socket to remove flywheel ?
Hey guys,
I would like to know if it's allright to use a TORX 55 socket to remove the flywheel bolts. The Torx is a six point socket and it seems the bolts are 12 point and require a special socket ... Cheers ! Phil |
No!
Use the correct triple square |
If you strip it out it is a pain...you can get triple-square bits from sears.ca or Babco.

Thanks guys,
That's what i was thinking, just called my local auto parts supplier to order one ... Is it OK to use an impact gun to remove the flywheel bolts ? It worked well for the pressure plate fasteners ! Cheers ! Phil |
sure
|
Hmm, I've seen the correct tools for sale at several regular old auto parts stores.
Porsche wasn't the only manuf to use them. Maybe it's different up there, eh? ;) |
I've used a Torx to remove and replace my flywheel bolts a couple of times. No problems, just keep square to bolt head and lots of pressure holding it against the bolt.

Steve,
Not to worry,i found a set that i will be picking up after work tomorrow! Imagine that ! One cannot have too many tools :) I'm in the middle of an engine drop due to an exploding clutch and i caught the "while i'm there " syndrome ... lol Cheers ! Phil Cheers ! Phil |

Heat is your friend when removing these bolts. I use a propane torch to heat up the bolt (it doesn't take much) and they typically come right out. (using a triple square bit). W/O heat they are much harder to remove.
regards, al |
Can anybody confirm if i need an 11mm triple square bit for the flywheel ???
That seems to be the equivalent of a Torx 55 ... Cheers ! Phil |
I wouldn't touch these with an impact. Too easy to strip. With the flywheel locked down and a good-sized 1/2" ratchet or breaker, I've never had an issue to remove these. As mentioned, heat may be of assistance on those that need it.

Edit - nothing in the parts catalog that defines the bolt socket size with granularity. Also, the parts link provides nothing and the 901/915 clutch replacement provide nothing (tech info center) http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/more_info.cgi?pn=930-102-206-00-M58&catalog_description=Flywheel%20Bolt%20%28sold% 20per%20each%2C%20%39%20req%2E%29%2C%20%39%31%31%2 F%39%31%31%20Turbo%20%28%31%39%37%38%2D%38%39%29%2 0 http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_clutch_replace/911_clutch_replace1.htm (references "special tool") I remember it being 12mm. |
take a steel hammer & smack the bolt head flat on - i.e. normal to the axis of the bolt

Still need to know what size triple square bit i need ... I measured the 55 Torx bit and it's 11mm,just need to confirm the triple square size ...
Cheers ! Phil |
Phil
Its a 12 mm. I did not have to use air gum to removed them. The trick is to be totally square off as the bite is very shallow. I could ship you mine but thanks to Post Canada it would be cheaper to buy one. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1317984258.jpg |
Hi JJ,
I ordered a 10 and a 12 from my local auto parts store, they're only $4.00 each so i'll be good to go. Thank you for your consideration and the info! I know you did an engine drop recently, any tips while i'm there ! Did you ever get your car back on the road this Summer ? I have a crankcase gasket kit on the way so i'll be replacing whatever seals and "O" rings that come with the kit ... Cheers ! Phil |
Hey Phil
Yeah, finally got her on the road late August. Start on the second try, what a relief. The sound of the SSis mated to a 2In/2Out was worth the wait according to the guys behind me :D Well might biggest tips is, resist the "while you are in there impulse" :) it could be expensive... If you leak from anywhere, its a good time to fix them, especially the Oil Triangle of Death (crankcase breather, thermostat & the idiot light. Good time to change the Oil Idiot light, under $5. Since you got a G50 transmission, the drop is straight down unlike with the 915. Take a lots of pics and notes as you might not remember everything when the engine go back in. Have fun JJ |
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but if any Canadian peeps are looking for the tri-square bit/socket Princessauto (Canadian version of Harbour Freight) carries 4 different sets from $17. to $30.

I have nice German ones (Stahlwille) but I was in a pinch
once and got some from my local parts place. They don't have a socket that you could use a ratchet on. Instead they have just a straight shaft; think of an Allen key without the bend. You hold the non-triple square shaft end with a socket. They are apparently made of a structural cheese (soft). They rounded over after a couple uses. Not recommended. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1486045327.jpg |
I used this, <$7 at Amazon shipped. Don't know how I used to get by before internet shopping.

If you do a lot of VW and Porsche work you need:
8mm, VW and 914 CV's 10mm, 996, flywheel and trans (I believe fly might be 12mm) 14mm, 911, flywheel, VW T4 auto trans flywheel (TC mount plate) |
