stalling at all stop signs

Picked up my 77t last night from the transport co. The car rev up and down while at idle--figured this was because it was a cold start. Drove the car home via highway--20 miles--no proplem. Start driving in town, and it stalls at every stopsign and stop. Is this common? Any suggestions appreciated.

The car revving up and down at idle makes me think the idle regulator is going nuts. That and the fact that it can't keep the engine running makes me think it's the alternator. I'd have a mechanic check the voltage running through the system.

Are there any other strange electrical issues? Seatbelt or e-brake light coming on unexpectedly? I'm thinking alternator trouble. I'd be curious to see what your mechanic has to say.

Hope this helps.

I would check the point gap (you have a CD unit so dwell angle does not matter) and timing first (engine warm of course). If your problem continues, check voltage, etc as indicated above, there are other possibilities.

Let us know what happens

I had the same problem. On the highway for hours then died on the offramp. Idle jumping up and down. The solution came from this site and it was a simple adjustment of the mixture screw! You must have CIS, so the adjustment screw is between the fuel distributor and rubber housing that fits over the sensor plate and throttle body. It takes that 3mm adjustable wrench to get down into it and make the adjustment. Mine was too rich, so I leaned it out with a click or two counterclockwise.........."right is rich"........

It worked to solve this very aggrevating problem that I thought would take forever to fix. One more piece of advise.....I had some gunk in that small adjustment hole. I took the airbox cover off and held up the sensor plate and arm with one hand while I sort of foreced the adjustment wrench down with the other. Worked better!

I cannot beleive how sensitive the CIS is to mixture adjustment.
Hope this comes in handy.

Regards

Bob

Just some random suggestions to consider if the above don't check out: fuel pressure too high, clogged air filter, idle air slide/mixture not set, bad O2 sensor richening up the stew.

You might try turning the idle bypass screw out a half (if it has one) just to keep you going until you get it to a CO machine.
