Need ideas on how to get a car moved.
Hi
I want to buy a car in California and move it to Chicago. The car is not able to be driven, no brakes among other needs. Does anybody have experience or ideas on how to get it moved at a good cost? Can a car hauler deal with a car that has no brakes? Thanks for ideas. |

![]() ![]() This is done all the time. Most shippers have winch capabilites and will do this for an extra charge, sometimes a hefty extra charge. Start Googling & calling around. Good luck, hope its a nice early 911. Len ![]() |

I'm all for a DIY adventure. Drive out in a PU Truck. Get a U-Haul car trailer there, load er up, drive back. Add the adventure to your Porsche experience file. Thats how I got mine from Florida to NC. (Had to go and see it and transact money/documents anyway.)

Yes
Yes, I thought about DIY.
Your right it could be fun. But to drive from Chicago to CA with my truck would take days, plus fuel, lodging, could sleep in truck. Then return, I understand what your saying it's a experience not a money saver. I found costs on shipping from $1200 to $2000 |

Yeah, probably is two days each way. Cost would be close to a wash not including lost work time if you count it. I love to drive/travel though so the money is being spent on "me" vs anonymous others. Work in some goofing off along the way to make it fun, its a nice time of year to travel.

Gas is expensive, but with the economy the way it is you should be able to ship it to chi for 800 max on an open trailer. I shipped two cars 4 years ago from Ca to chicago in an enclosed trailer and it cost 1850, but I saw no winches on that trailer. make sure you do your home work and make sure the same truck picks it up and drops it off. A lot of these companies pick the car up and drive it to another facilty, they take it off, it waits there for another trucking company to pick it up from that spot, and this can happen a few times.

I'm in the same boat. I need to get my car from the west coast to the east coast and I'm thinking I don't want to trailer it (it's completely drivable but I have one driver two cars). But my concern is that the car has been lowered to Euro specs and has a front spoiler. Most companies say to uninstall ground effects...but I'd rather not have to do that.
What companies have people used to transport thier Porsches? I'd like to get it from point A to point B without damage.

I used Passport (now FEDEX) to get my SC from VA to OK. Euro ride height and front spoiler. No worries.

Been doing some research today and had a few quotes. Enclosed carriers are going to cost atleast $500 more than open carriers. From Vegas to New York...I was getting the following quotes.
Fidelity (Open)...$945 Auto Shipping Network (Open)...$995 Fidelity (Enclosed)...$1445 Direct Connect Auto (Open)...$1450 Passort (Enclosed)...$1975 Enclosed Vehicle Transport (Enclosed)...$2400 I enjoyed talking with Fidelity, Joe seemed very competent and reassured me that my car would stay with the same truck and driver the entire way...although they do a circuit of the US in a "U" shape...west cost through Texas area to Florida and up the coast. Auto Shipping answered my questions...but didn't really give me anything more. Direct Connect left me with a bad taste...and they seemed overprice anyway. Passport was an online only quote, but their website looks good...I would expect nothing less from FedEx. EVT specializes in transport exotic cars I guess, but they were the most expensive. All the carriers said my car would be no problem with a ride height of about 6"...they all said they did cars as low as 3-4".

Cost me a $1000 to have a running truck hauled from Arizona to Ohio. You're in the ball-park with your quotes.
I'll ask at work who/whom we're using. We buy cars out of state all the time.

Wow, so much for the economy taking a toll as I would have thought prices would have come down, but then again gas has gone up in 4 plus years. There is website that rates car carriers. There are also small companies, one man operations, that will pick your car up and drive it door to door. These guys put it in a one car trailer that you see race cars in and some times you can find pretty good deals.

I did this same thing a few years ago from SF area to Chicago area. It was cheaper to do it from a Hub to a Hub destination. I used DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) and they were pretty cheap. It was an open trailer though, so be cautious. I think it was about 650 one way.
