4 speed shifter

I am slowly putting my 76 back together and forgot how the shifter top rubber goes in.
The picture shows all of the components of the shifter. My shifter does not match any of the stock diagrams I could find. Does anyone know the orientation of the black rubber piece. Does the straight edge side go toward the passenger side or the driver side?
I don't have the transmission in yet and I know I can change this item without taking the whole shifter apart.

It's been awhile but I'm pretty sure the straight edge goes toward the driver to allow movement into the reverse plain. I hope this helps..
