Pre 3.2 Conversion Post #1

Some may know that I have decided to put a MFI 3.2 motor in my narrow '72 after considering about every angle of rebuilds vs. transplants.

Sometimes what you want and what you need are met with an opportunity that you cannot turn down; such is my situation.

The somewhat period correct 3.2 MFI motor that will soon find its way into my '72's engine bay was dynoed today and the results are pretty exciting.

The motor made 270hp at the wheels with open headers and 260hp at the wheels at 7000rpms with a track acceptable exhaust. Give or take, this motor is good for about 300hp at the crank . . . which is nice indeed.

I'll run SSIs and a modified Dansk (2 in - 2 out) so I will probably see lower hp numbers, but more than enough visceral fun for a ~2400 pound car that looks like a cute little vintage 911.

The set-up will see dyno time in my car for MFI tuning and I will have some pictures and a digest style report at my website very soon.

Stay tuned! (pardon the pun )

Regards,

Kurt

Thumbs up

Wow. MFI and that kind of power is going to be a real kick in the pants. You may have found the best of both worlds. And since you didn't have to build it yourself, you may have also saved yourself a bundle along the MFI development trail. (At least, if this thread is any indication.)

I can't wait to see that thing all put together. It's going to be a real work of art.

I'm Green

Since you can't see me I'll fill you in. I'm green, with envy. This would'nt happen to be that beautiful 3.2 MFI that was on Rennlist aways back would it? I saw that motor and knew it was a great deal. You couldn't build that motor anywhere near the price he had on it.

Congrats
Bobby

Jack:

Thanks for the kind words - I think your good karma of finding great parts (including a low mile 3.6!) at great prices may be rubbing off on me; or at least I hope it is.

The great thing about this motor is that is was the personal motor of a well respected builder at a shop with a great reputation here in San Diego. It has been tuned and sorted thoroughly . . . and is not heavy on mileage.

Bobby:

I am not sure if this motor has been offered for sale previoulsy, but it was built and raced by Mark Kinninger at Black Forest. Mark's a really nice guy and a really great driver - and his wife had the TTOD with this motor at a recent PCA time trial event at the Q . . . until the quite radical Dieter's 914 had a run.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

What I have learned about Black Forest and Mark over the past few months is that they do things "right". I have also learned that you have to spend some money for truly competent work, but, it is better to spend the money up-front for a proper job than to face potential financial hazards down the road as the work is "tested".

Regards,

Kurt

Kurt,
It's not the same motor. Sounds very similar though. The motor I speak of was built by someone else in Costa Mesa. I forget the name. It was built from a 3.0 and had 98mm P+C's. the MFI pump was built to match using a Dyno and Gus at Pacific. I believe it also had Gerry Woods cams. Rebuilt throttle bodies and custom stacks. (looked like Motorsports). It had never been installed just spent time on the dyno. the guy was asking $6500 which I thought was very reasonable. top notch job.

Henry Schmidt built that motor

I inquired about the 3.2 MFI motor on Rennlist and it was built by Henry at Supertec in Costa Mesa.

If it had Raceware or ARP fasteners I would have bought it, but it didn't.

Kurt ,you have me thinking that the Dyno numbers i got are not good ,reason for, I turbo my 3.2 got 100 hp more and she dyno
320/276rwhp so how can a N/A make that? the best numbers i heard are 250hp from a 3.2 N/A engine ,something is wrong somewhere ? but where? not to start troubble just want to see if my numbers are that far off.

Hi Juan:

I'll post the dyno sheets when I get them. FYI, this motor is built on a 930 case with a 2.7 crank, Mahle high compression p/c set (about 10:1 and is shimmed a bit), 906 cam grind by Web Cam, fully sorted and tuned MFI by Pacific Injection with Raceware on the heads and on the rods and AASE valve springs and Ti retainers. Also has the Carrera chain tensioner update. It is running a coiless Permatune and is only single plug.

There was some port work done on the heads, but I need to get the details.

Mark has been building motors for about 25 years and I bet he has picked up a thing or two over the years. He admitted he was a bit surprised at the output of this motor, but several dyno runs confirmed the numbers.

BTW, I have read about a few built 3.2s that made well over 300hp the crank, most of these peaky race motor types. This motor should have a decent power band, but probably similar to an early S.

I look forward to providing future reports.

Regards,

Kurt
