Swapping steering wheel
I want to swap my Carrera wheel for a Early Carrera Fatty wheel I have. Here is a pic of the back of the steering wheel.
Firstly apologies if this is a stupid question. Do I need to add anything to the back of the early Steering wheel. (When I got the wheel it had a rotten circular piece of foam between the metal collapsable hub and the Plastic outer shell) Is there a seals ? or gasket set ? or do I just remove the Carerra wheel and place the Fatty wheel on the steering column splines tighten up the nut clean and re attach the horn electrical contact and that's it ? ![]() As I said sorry if this is stupid, and im missing something seemingly obvious. I want to do as much as I can on my car. I read the steering wheel replacement threads and know I need a friend to help or an impact wrench to get the old wheel off. There was no mention of gaskets or seals to be changed in the swap. Thanks. |

You described it correctly, unbolt old one, install new one. There is a foam seal that goes there. I would guess that it is to eliminate any rattle or possible vibration between the parts. You could probably make your own piece if you found some thin foam and cut it to shape.

It's been a long time, but I don't remember needing an impact wrench or anyone's help to remove the steering wheel once the nut was removed.

I wouldn't worry about a seal unless you find that once you install it you have a lot of rattling (unlikely if installed correctly and no plastic parts are broken).
Just pop off the horn pad, take off the wire for the horn (you may want to disconnect your battery as the horn will sound if the wire is grounded at all), remove the nut holding the wheel on and swap for new. Once you install the new one, prior to tightening everything up, put the key in the ignition and unlock the steering column, then turn wheel right and left after triggering turn signals to ensure that the turn delete function is working correctly. OK? Then button everything back up. I think there's a torque value on the nut (27mm?) which holds the wheel on. I just get it as tight as i can. DO NOT use the steering column lock to hold the wheel while tightening. I've heard of things getting broken when this happens. Get a partner if you can't apply enough torque while holding the wheel yourself. Nice swap, enjoy it!
