Antenna replacement
Currently I have a non-stock non-moveable antenna on the drivers front fender. I have read that this is the location for the stock location for manual antennas. What I would really like is the electric antenna. Can it be installed in this location? If so, why the two different locations for the two types of antennas?
Also what is the best procedure for removeal and replacement? Any gotchas? Thanks

The electric antenna goes on the passenger-side fender, I assume because the a/c-system dryer is inside the driver's-side fender pretty much right where the bulk of the electric-antenna mechanism needs to go. If you don't have a/c, I see no reason why the electric antenna wouldn't fit there. You'd have to drill a hole or two for sheetmetal screws inside the fenderwell, but I see no reason it wouldn't work if you don't have an a/c dessicator there.

some manual antennas went in the door hinge bulkhead area in front of the door, requiring door removal to swap them. an electric unit won't fit in there.

I replaced the manual antenna on drivers side. It is bolted to bulkhead. I screwed some hooks to my garage ceiling to attach 1/4in. line to, and then removed the fender attached to the line. I have great door allignment and the fender removal was an easy solo job. The line aids fender alignment and Zero scratches. My door hinges still perfect in this "never hit" Calif. '77 911. Installing wires for electric door locks was easy w/fender removed.

ahhh, one of those little additions that the Carrera has over the SC. My 85 has it in the windshield. I remember my 83 antenna dying and having to take the wheel/tire off to replace the device. I wonder which Porsche engineer had the brainfart to come up with that design.

Well I was hoping that I could replace it easier then that. I don't think I want to remove the fender or the door just to restore the antenna to the stock manual version. Guess I'll live with the one I have until I have a good reason to remove either the fender or door.
Thanks for all the info.
