Window Woes!

I read a lot about these problems and "Thought" I was going to be prepared for what I saw. First, I did not realize that the Cross Arms started in 1979 / 1980 and thought I had been "Upgraded" then when I finally got everything out, it was the WIndow Lifter rail that was completely rusted out and one side had actually bent down. So I ordered New rails for both sides knowing if one is bad, the other one is soon to follow.

For a car that was bought new in Nevada and spent the other part of its life in Miami / Florida, how does this happen?? Plus, the last owner never drove in the rain and kept the car in a Garage! I am down to either the Salt Air in Florida or someone was Lying! How often has anyone seen the window rail Rusted out??

My glass channel rusted out but not the verticals. I have a targa though and I was surprised to see how bad the channel was given the car lived in Dallas/Atlanta/Houston.

Thanks, I feel a "Little" better now! I expected to see it Rusty but not rusted OUT completely I am thinking that The real fun will be getting everything in alignment "BEFORE" I do the final glueing of the window in the track / Rail. I guess what I am really saying is, "I need a weekend off from doing what I NEED to do as opposed to what I WANT to do!

I rarely believe someone that says a 30 year old car was never driven in the rain - but that's just me.

Besides rain, cars get washed and water does get inside the doors. I know this because when I drive my car after washing, it never fails that my spotless windows get wet when rolling up the windows - due to moristure inside the door.

I think the primary culprit may be the window weatherstripping.

Lasly, I was interested whith your comment "I thought I had been Upgraded"

I'm guessing that there is an "upgrade track system" for early cars (I have a '74 with stiff windows). I'd love to hear how this works.

Stupidity on my part for not knowing when the switch was between Parallel and Cross window regulator systems. You now can ONLY get the Cross arm system which Porsche used from 1980 forward. (Think of the cross arm system as a pair of Sissors wide open and as you close them the taller they get.) This is how the Cross Arm system works vs the Parallel Arm system (WHich I think you have and I have NO idea of how that works.

I knew the last guy and if he even thought it was going to rain he did not drive it! plus the car only had 124,000 Original miles when I got it so for sure it was not driven MUCH!

Of course you are right about the washing and window glass seals. They were the First thing I replaced and the water does go down the glass to the holder first!

fwiw i used rtv to seal the window into the rubber and then the rubber into the track. this was done when the window was out of the door, then everything lowered down into place.

OKI hope After cleaning the window that I can get the Part in the correct place. I am thinking about using a Heavy duty Black Adhesive Glue. Like the RTV it never completely dries out but has a SUper grip on the Glass, Rubber and Steel! I hope to try all of this on Sunday!
