Porsche Crest '79 3.3 Turbo - No Spool or Boost, Need Diagnosis Assistance !

Guys,

During the maiden voyage in my 3.3 Turbo transplant it took about five seconds the realize the turbo was not participating. Here are some facts to help diagnose:

'79 3.3 Turbo motor, 25k miles, mods are MSD and later style fuel distributor. The turbo was spinning freely when I manually spun it prior to install. It didn't spin easy but did move with a little push it moved fine. I changed the wastegate dump from into the muffler to into the air. The only other possible issue my be the removal of a smog-related cannister which had a broken pipe. I've attached an image of the void from the missing cannister. I closed off the inlets with tin.

The only other major issue was a low RPM cough or chatter throughout all gears. This may be related to the Turbo not boosting. I'm not certain. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Your persistence will pay off!

I can't make out the canister thing. Where at on the engine is it located?
I asume you have checked the wastegate to see if it isn't dumping all the time.
You are certain that the turbo is not spooling? Not a fuel related issue? These CIS systems get real ugly when air is introduced. I changed out the fuel pump on my SC once, it ran as if on 5cyl and 50hp for a couple of miles before it spit out the air and immediately ran as before.

Rarly,

I'm not sure it's not a fuel issue. The cannister runs parallel to the inside of the passenger side thermal reactor. You can see the oil return tubes in the photo. What is the best way to test the wastgate ? Any input would help. Thanks Brian, how's your project going ?

the turbo must spin freely.
do you feel any exhaust out the wastegate pipe at idle and low rpm? you shouldn't.
