Install 3.2 into 911 SC

I am installing a complete 3.2 with harness and DME into a 1981 Euro 911 SC Targa (p.o. broke the 3.0). I have been unable to find a thread or any hints to install this with any necessary adaptations for this swap. Thanks.

other than the wiring (which you have the full harness) there should be no difference in mounting or such. There may be a flywheel change if the motor came out of a G50 car.

Thank you for your resopnse. The engine came out of a 1985 Carrera, so it bolted up to the 915 without a problem. The 1981 had an external voltage regulator and the 1985 Carrera regulator is built into the alternator. I just wasn't sure if there were any other surprises like this. Does anyone know of any? Thanks again.

I had it done. My '82 SC now has an '84 3.2. You need the wiring harness, a DME box and I think you may need a new tach. I'm very happy with the results. Good Luck...!

If you are using the 81 transaxle, you will need to notch for the speed and reference sensors. The fuel lines will require a change-up. Couple of ways to do this, Len Cummings (he's on this board) can build you a bang-up set of lines.

He's doing a set for me right now that would be especially nice (3.2 into my 81 coupe). I'm using the accumulator line (with the 120 fitting) to a shortened supply side line and then re-using one fitting for the return line with the rest from Len. He's building both - but reusing a couple of my fittings. It will be a very clean and workmanlike setup.

The 14 pin connector in the engine bay is a bit too far toward the rear of the car to mate up with the 3.2. Some people cut the harness that and extend a bunch of wires, but if you patiently take it apart, you'll find that you can move that plug about 6 inches and only splice 2 wires (if my memory is correct - I just did mine a few weeks ago). Super sanitary.

Your 81, like mine, has a harness hole on the passenger side. It is possible to reuse this hole by enlarging slightly. You can mount the DME where the 81 control unit was at - some of the holes line up perfectly. Need to be clear and careful in your routing of the forward harness to give yourself enough length to work with. If you felt like jumping the shark and making a second hole in your car (plugging up the passenger side wiring harness hole) - then run the engine/dme harness into the driver's side and mount the unit under the driver's seat. That gives you a few more inches of length but the downside is a few non-factory holes (the hole for the harness, and now holes into your floor pan to mount unless you build a bracket to suspend it from the seat mounts).

Just a few ideas. My 81 is the second car I've done this to, the other was an 80 - basically the same thing.
