Heater options without heat exchangers?
What are some of the options in regards to maintaining heat for cars running aftermarket headers that don't have heat exchangers / heater boxes?
|
Well, if you have a AC compressor you reverse the flow through the evaporator and turn it into a heat pump.

Do a search for Webasto or Eberspächer. They are gas heaters that are used for trucks to heat their cabs. Early 911s and the Yellowbird used them also.
|
I fitted a gas heater from Eberspächer:

Some have added heated seats in place of heat. Just another option to think about
|
Thanks all. The Eberspächer looks like a neat solution.
So these just run off the battery right? |

Not cheap.....runs off a siphon to your fuel tank. There are some electrical components, they all mount in the smuggler box. But doesn't have to.
Some AV aftermarket installs use the box. |
Looking at the Harbor Freight flyer and they have a lighter plug in heater for cheap...in a pinch :=)
|
Someone posted a fix by clamping a piece of exhaust tubing to the header, and then running the air through that. He said it worked well. Kind of like a home-made heat exchanger. Should be on this board somewhere.

RV Heater and RainX for the glass works just fine.

This might not be the most elegant solution, but these little heaters are amazing. In the small cabin 911, you don't need much to heat and defrost. The problem is where to securely mount it?

+1 one for RainX but don't forget the RainX anti fog for the inside of the windows

Either HEs or a gas heater is about all your options. I spent two winters in No. Nevada....trust me. RainX is good for fogging windscreen..... |
an electrically heated front screen is an option and popular in competition cars over this side of the atlantic due to the simplicity.
Harry Hockley Motorsport in Wales (UK) is listing them for 911s. Do a google search on hhms. I haven't seen these windscreens but I can vouch for Hockley's normal quality in the parts I have seen supplied- he builds proper competition rally cars for works teams. There are other suppliers as well. Try heated windscreen as a google search. |
Did an internet search and a number of vendors in England and one here I saw..$675 for it in 2009

typical prices on this side of the pond for heated laminated front windscreen seem to be GB pounds 205 ( evans motorsport) GB pounds 215 (Hockley motorsport) both plus vat( value added tax 20%) but as its for export from the EU they shouldnt be charging you vat.
The freight might be interesting however? just another option. let us know what solution you come up with. |
