MSD Ignition and best Spark Plug Gap

Just installed the MSD 6 part no. 6420 Ignition Box. Hhave set my spark plug gaps at 1.40 mm and engine seems to be running ok. I have a 79 3.0. Is there anyone out there that has experimented with other gaps? porsche 101 suggests between 1.27 & 1.49 I believe. What tends to happen if you go smaller and if you go wider than 1.40? anyone....

Porsche Crest MSD Gap

I have a 6AL and was running .90 as an experiment, my MFI runs SUPER RICH (haven't put my Gastester on it) and after about 2 minutes of idle (at 750-1000 RPM) the plugs begin to "pop" and are fouled. Folks say you can open the gap so wide you can stick a matchstick in there. Others cut half the electrode OFF.

Porsche Crest Metric

Lemme see, .050" =1.27 mm

1.49 would be .05855 ~ .060"

Looks like I'm going to have to buy a bigger feeler gauge.

Before I put the MSD on I was running a permatune at around .70mm and no gassy or petroleum smell. With the MSD i installed it at 1.40mm gap and it's very gassy smelling at idle. Letting it run as I type and it's gasssing me out. So should i gap less for a hotter burn or even more. That is the question. Any thoughts?
