Question Transmission rebuild tools. Who sells?

Planning to rebuild my 912 5 speed transmission as Michael Caterino did on this site. Where can I buy the critical tools for same? Thanks, Bob Prentice

Bob,

I guess if you're going to call me out by name I'd better reply! First off, the thread in question: 1970 (911/01) transmission refurb issues.

It's worth sharing some more details about where you're at in the job. Have you taken it apart enough to know a full rebuild's in order, or are you just preparing for the worst? Some of the special tools are only necessary if you really have to take it all the way down and if you lose some important settings/reference points, like the intermediate plate gasket thickness, which affects the pinion depth in the ring gear. That's about where the pros should probably take over in any case.

Grady's post on the first page of the thread lays it all out pretty well. There are bargain solutions and cadillac solutions, depending on your budget and desires. I made some things (input shaft holder, mainly), improvised on others (crowsfoot instead of the extra deep socket for the big nut on the input shaft), and borrowed others (shift fork jig).

Post more about what you are doing, and you'll find lots of help along the way.

Mike

Mike, thanks, I'm just preparing for the worst on the basis of noises. But I've yet to open the transmission. I've printed your adventures and great photos and the advice of Grady and others and it makes a fine textbook (along with Dr. Evil's Video). Will post again when deeper inside. Thanks again, Bob
