My 911 broke down 2night- ignition trouble?

Hi guys,

My first post on the forum

I live i Norway and bought my first Porsche 964 from California this summer.

Tonight, on my last drive for the season, my engine startet to make "poffing" sounds whilst driving. It got worse and worse and I had to stop. I had lost almost all power on the engine and it was running rough. The catalyst was read hot.

I got my car back to my garage on the back of a truck.

Any tip of what to do?

Kind regards
Steve

What year is your car and how many miles are on it?

Catalytic converters can become plugged after many years and they will cause your engine to quit running. One of the symptoms of a plugged converter is they get red hot and glow.

It a 964 so post 89. Wow RED HOT too bad no pics

What type of gas and oil are you using? +1 clogged cat. If it is it, get a pre-muffler or sport cat.

Check your cap and rotor too.

Hi,

It is a 1990 model. (One owner car- got to love the U.S :-)
It has run 60 000 miles.

If the Catalytic get plugged, will it run poorly, or will it just stop?
It felt like it was running on one less cylinder. Kind of....

Unleaded 98 and Mobile 1 (5W-50)

If it is the cat would you just remove the darn thing? (better sound and performance- right?)

Yes more top end power and deeper base sound.

Wow 98, you mean 98RON, correct?

In anycase, if it felt like a cylinder, then check the Cap and Rotor as well. Also in a dark garage, while the engine is on, open the engine lid to see if you get errand sparks, maybe a spark plug dislodged

Red hot catalytic converter usually means to much fuel going through the engine. Possible missfire on one or more cylinders. You will have to diagnose the ignition and fuel injection. You can do a compression test to make sure the engine itself is still ok.

How likely is the "distributor drive belt" the reason for my troubles?

Anyone experienced problems with the distributor belt? Difficult to change?

If it has never been changed, most likely. Pull out both distributor caps and spin the left side rotor. If it spins, belt is broken.

The road was dry. No rain in sight.

I opened the distributors last evening. The drive belt was broken. The rotor was moving, but the belt was not moving at all. So I guess that`s what caused med problems.

I have also removed the cat and replaced it with a "dummy" which is empty.

Help needed!

Anyone who can tell me how to replace the belt between the two distribrutors?

I have removed the cap on both distributors, but it is hard to see what to remove in order to get to the belt.

Just hope you didn't damage your pistons from preignition.
