'87 Carrera (US) test drive........

Someone asked me today to test drive his '87 Carrera (US model) with 915 trans (???) and I obliged. So I got into the car and tried to put it in REVERSE to back out from the driveway. I could not get the shifter into reverse and checked the shift knob. To my surprise, the shift pattern is not the same as that in my SC's with 915 transmission. Where the reverse is below 5th gear shift. This one has the reverse shift beside 1st and up.

Since I have only driven SC's and a couple of '77 cars which have similar shift patterns, when (year/model) did change occur? Do the 915 and G-50 transmission have different shift pattern? Please help me understand. Thanks.

Tony

You guessed it! The 87 has the G50 transmission and they are not the same shift pattern.

I'll see if I can find a picture.

87 was the first year for the G50, hydraulic clutch gearbox.

This shows the G50 shifting pattern better than the other picture. Please pardon the colors!

I've been told that there are '87 Carrera (US) cars produced with 915 transmission(???). What is the identifying numbers on the transmission to signify it is a G-50 by just looking under the engine/transmission side? Pictures would help. Thanks again.

There may have been a few very early 87 models with a 915 gearbox but...

If the one you drove had the pattern as you stated, then it without question a G50, 5 speed.

Now, if the shift knob was changed then I'm pretty sure you have had a problem finding reverse.
