'87 3.2 rear drop link torque, 61 or 66 ft lb?

Bentley shows the torque on one page as 61 ft-lb (85 Nm) and on another as 66 ft-lb (90 Nm) for the M12 bolts for the rear sway drop links.

Can someone set me straight (and/or do 5 ft-lbs matter)?

Thanks,
Dan

I would go with 61 which still seems a bit high, the bolt isn't that big.

On a related note, I had a clunking coming from underneath the car (only on right turns) a few years ago. It sounded like it was coming from the right front somewhere. Turned out it was the right rear drop link that had loosened up a bit. Probably not a bad idea to check them from time to time.

You could just split the difference and go 63, a couple pounds either way shouldn't matter. Perhaps someone who has a factory manual could look it up.

61 ft lbs for M12 is not that high. The engine and transmission mount bolts are M12 also. They're torqued to 58 ft-lb. I believe the sway link bolts are fine thread, so it would make sense the spec would be a bit higher. Also for reference, BMW wheel bolts are M12 size and torqued to ~80 ft-lb. Its a common size (1/2 in. or 12mm) for alot of cars' wheel studs.

Bottom line is you're fine in the 60 ft lbs range.

Kurt / Phil / Kevin

Thanks for the info - I have the parts and am planning my winter projects, sketching (writing) out the approach when I found this stumbling block.

it's appreciated!

Dan,

You have no idea how many times i removed and reinstalled the R/H side torque link bolt when i changed my spring plate bushings and installed and reindexed 29 mm torsion bars ... lol
All that to get the perfect ride height (fought a whole afternoon for 1/4 inch )while leaving the eccentric adjuster in the neutral position to make corner balancing easier !

Torqued it to 61 ft/lbs over a dozen times
Good luck with your projects !!!

Cheers !
Phil
