Metal polish and plenty of elbow grease. You need several goes to get rid of the finer scratches which is where the elbow grease comes in

Vaseline - really.
Do a search and check your owner's manual.

Yup. Vaseline is really a multi task substance. Will work wonders on your Fuchs too.

Then rub it out with a cloth or paper towel.

Just some clarification -isn't the vaseline for the black part and the metal polish for the silver portion? The vaseline isn't going to shine the silver part up right?

To polish the lip of the fuchs on my Targa, I use 320 grit sandpaper to start and switch to 600, 800, 1000 and finally 2000 grit to take care of the anodizing. Afterward there was polishing with 000 and 0000 steel wool and finally with a dremel using Mother Aluminum and Mag polish.
They came out looking like mirrors. Every person who has seen them has commented on how good they look and asked how I did it. The key is not to go crazy and use a lot of pressure with the sanding. This is even more true for the heavier grits. I used the same process to polish the lips of the rims on my CBR 600 several years ago and it work great, so I followed the same process with my Fuch's. Then again, my arms ended up killing me and I wore the skin off 3 of my fingers doing the Fuch's... ![]()

If your lips are polished, then use a bare metal polish such as Wenol, Mothers, or similar. I've used them all and I find the ones with some fine abrasives are better then a simple polish like cotton wadding. You will know if it is working if the rag and your finger tips are turning black from the oxidation. No need to wait for drying, just polish after you have applied to all the needed areas. As far as vaseline, I guess that works and it is in your manual for anodized rims. How something that is nondrying and basically just grease works is open to opinion. Seems to me you are simply applying a grease and the oily moisture is changing the appearance until it eventually dries or is removed. Seems a spray bottle of light oil would do the same.

I've had real good success with Speedy Metal Polish. Not sure it can be purchased in a store but I got it online. Works similar to other products except other are more of a paste while this is a liquid. Highly recommended.

The vaseline is for the entire wheel. Per your owner's manual.
No it won't 'polish' the wheel, but it will make what's there look fantastic. Wipe well so there isn't any left to collect dirt. ...and 911 Don... 'Fuch' is not a word. Always FUCHS, even if just one wheel. (Fuchs is Fox in German... Saying Fuch is like leaving the x off the end of Fox.) Last edited by tcar; 09-01-2011 at 11:33 AM.. |

Not to hijack the thread, but my 924 has Fuch-like 8 spoke wheels. They are polished (the spokes and the outer lip) with the recessed parts black. Will Vaseline help protect these wheels too? I repainted the black myself with a semi-gloss paint. I just want to make sure the Vaseline isn't just for an anodized coated wheel...

From the original poster 911_Don - I don't understand how you can tell what he is asking.
How to get a polished finish on stock Fuchs - or how to clean up the stock finish on stock Fuchs?

To get them shiny i.e. no scratches +/- pits requires elbow grease. Obviously , mechanical means if they are in bad shape as most humans don't have the energy to complete the job manually - and then a metal polish . Vaseline is the icing on the cake so to speak , the lip gloss for garage queens & concours showponies.

I clayed the black parts and was surprised how good the wheels looked. At first I thought the oil in the clay was just oiling them up, like vasoline. I took some pre cleano and cleaned a wheel to remove any oily residue and then buffed them lightly with a cotton cloth. They looked just as good as they did after claying. I did this last winter and have driven 8k miles and aside from weekly washes with soap and water they still look great.
