Anyone ever build a Rally 911?

Curious to see if anyone has taken on a 911 rally project. I live in Northern, Pa and run back roads all the time (not with my 89 G50) but would love to with a 911 so a rally car project has intrigued me for a while. So if anyone has ever built one I would be interested in photos and spec's.
Thanks!

I've seen a few around here. I think they are awesome too. If I had back woods/offroading options I'm pretty sure I would do one too(I guess there is the desert..). Kind of a car where dents and scrapes just make it look better.

Oh yeah...I want to do a rally car so bad. I think it would be totally bad ass to cruise around town and then take it out on the old logging roads on my way home.

I want to pick up a salvage title 911 and go full Oregon hillbilly on it.

Cheers,
Craig

Dude, you must have a lot of money laying around. I wouldn't build it from the ground up unless you were going to get real deep into a rally club or some kind of racing.

I would just get a descent, cheap SC and start from there. Suspension, tires, lights and then a roof rack to throw all your camping gear on top. Maybe a Martini paint job if you pick up a white one.

I had a VW baja bug when I was younger and thing was a goat. I would sink that thing in mud during the rainy season; if you could move it an inch either way you were not stuck. A porsche 911 is going to rock...

How cool would be to throw all your crap on top and go camping for the weekend. You would be king hippie, my man.

Cheers,
Craig

How about doing it on an 89-94 C4 to have 4 wheel drive?

Next choice for me would be an SC. Maybe an 78/9 with no electronics. Strong motor and they can be had cheap.

I agree, I'll start with a mid to late seventies car and go from there, most likely drive it while I am working on it. I have a 72 T targa I'm willing to part with to get started on the job, my wife thinks I'm nuts but I love the looks of these cars and I think it will fit my lifestyle.

There was an article in Excellence fairly recently about a guy who did this with an SC. I think he put it up for sale pretty shortly thereafter. Great car. Definitely echo the other thoughts - unless you have a lot of time or a lot of money (or both, preferably) buy an extant project rather than starting from scratch.

Seems like all one needs is a Rat SC. Stock suspension with old shocks should be best.

Unless you want to go crazy high, just re-index the suspension. Maybe take the front sway bar off so the front bites and the rear slides. Put tires on the 6&7's or sell those and get some 15" steelies. Add a couple of aluminum plates or not.

Take out the back seats, carpets in the foot well, radio, and anything else not needed.

For the motor, just gut the cat, stick a second pipe on the right side of the muffler, and reset the CO. Could do something for the air cleaner and seal the ignition if needed.

that issue is sitting in my reading room right now, think it is from last year.

the one that just arrived yesterday has three different genarations of 911 rally cars inside.

i would go for a crapped out 78-83 SC convert to carbs, small two out muffler or mega phones

and do all that you would need to make it gravel ready. ride hight, narrow tires on steelies. pretty much all that makes Skippy not gravel friendly

You wont find many in competition: not competitive with modern AWD cars, too expensive for low-budget privateers and little interest in historic rally cars, at least in the US.

Saw one at the Rim of the World rally down in California three years ago:

A few more at a historic rally event when I was back in England earlier this year:

If you really want to know how to build a rally car, you should be talking to the folks on Special Stage.

I was eyeballing this with a rally project in mind. Too bad I'm young and poor...

How high do you think you can jack up a C4?

And BTW, that green longhood with gold minilites is dead sexy.

What kind of Rally are you talkin?

Dirt rally has been a staple of the 911 underworld forever. Check utube for 911 and "finnish."

********Hamilton in Brookvale makes a living at them.

Here's my tarmac rally toy at Targa Tasmania this year. From the ground up, baby.

Down here, even though Porsche's are 'specially rare and expensive (how about 40% luxury tax and $189 EACH for a wheel bearing?!?!) we consistently punch above our weight at rallies on and off road. A good 25% of the entrants at the big races are 911s.
