I used an engineering Roll Pin, tight a fit as possible, pressed and loctited into place. For those unaware, they are a hollow rod with a split down the side. Mr Hall confirmed this was fine, and I have had no movement whatsoever to date. I got a selection of them from a local garage and fount the one most suitable.

I pulled my distributor yesterday to replace the cam oil line. Remembering this post I took the opportunity to inspect the end play.

Seems I have about 1 mm play in the same place as Ben's, above the fixed washer.

Question is, what is the range of acceptable end play?

Mine is also an '86.

Clark,

Ideally, less than normal valve clearance! New distributors and well oiled examples measure in the 0.001" to 0.003" range!

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Bentley doesn't cover this matter! Realistically, I suppose the wear limit is around 0.010" to 0.012", so yours is over the limit by a wide margin!

Ragtop,
Where did you locate a $100 bosch distributor? I'm looking for one too.
I guess this is problematic of the Carrera series distributors, not to mention the DME(ECU) failure rate as they age. WHAT NEXT!

Sorry it to me so long to come across this string. There is a distributor rebuilder near me. Located in Albany, Oregon. United Automotive Industries, 1-800-388-5336 or 541-928-5368. I needed a piece for my distributor a few years ago, and they were very helpful. They rebuild Bosch as a specialty, but also rebuild for Oregon's Ferrari dealer (Marelli), do mostly commercial work but would do work for an individual as well. Address on them is 221 SW 29th, Albany, OR 97321. Shop owners might take note. I was very impressed with my tour of the facility.
