Question about exhaust - Thin/thick flange manifolds??

I see a lot of posts regarding heat exchangers and people refer to "thing flange manifolds" or thick.

Just curious what & why is this and how would I tell what my car has? I have a '74 2.7 with SSI heat exchangers and a Stainless Muffler (looks like stock [2 in 1 out bananna type] but I don't know as I haven't seen any markings.

This is just for my own 911 education.

Thick and thin refers to the stud length that mounts the pipes to the exhaust openings on the heads. If you have long threads then you need a thick manifold flange. If you have short threads, then you need thin manifolds.
I have a 77 with a 2.7 and it has long studs. The SSI I bought were thin, so I used washers to clear the up the length issue.

Can I tack a question on to this?

What range of cars need thick and thin?

IIRC thick came about to help alleviate exhaust leaks and warpage. Thin was just the first design. Just about all exhaust from the first 2.0 to 3.2 will interchange (with the corresponding oil lines and O2 bungs) I have had both thin and thick SSIs and have fitted them to 2.2s, 2.7s, 3.0s and 3.2s. Just changed the studs to match. Which is a good idea anyway if the motor is out.
