Why do sway bar mounts tear?

Is it just cornering loads, or are the getting snagged off road?

Peter Zimmermann 12-05-2011 09:47 AM

Stress loads from cornering. The mounts were barely good enough for o.e. bars on SCs/early Carreras, but their weakness was obvious with the bar size change in '86.

and bigger, stickier tires...

Thats what I initially thought. Reading all these threads about it had me wondering if there was some way to relocate the bar out of harms, way, but if most believe it is just the cornering loads, then I guess I am good with just beefing them up.

I can go back and tune in to that thread.

Thansk!

After years of metal fatigue something has to give.

now is there a solid fix to this issue or we just have to reweld?

dshepp806 12-05-2011 12:58 PM

Several "fixes" out there (even Porsche came out with a better part-"butterfly").

I have a driver side rear cracked, at present and have the WEVO's in hand to install (both sides-ahem)

It will certainly require "welding"!!!!!

Best!

Seems like latter chassis 911s have more of an issue with broken SB mounts. They're heavier.

To me, it seems like those that stiffen the sways without stiffer shocks and springs tear out the mounts.

I had a '77 100% track use, with stiff torsion bars and custom valved struts/shocks that was fine with the stock swaybar mounts.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Do you suppose that there was less force applied to the sway bar because more was taken up by the suspension?

dshepp806 12-05-2011 03:06 PM

Look at the later car's torsion bars.....larger, no?

22mm and larger sway bars, 300+ lbs. more chassis weight and wider wheels/tracks widths play a factor. Earlier 911s typically don't carry those specs., not to say the mounts are foolproof, just adequate for most early cars.

I found it interesting that Porsche acknowledged this having come out with the replacement butterfly mounts (Porsche part) (again).. even through 1989,.....These WEVO's will put an end to any further sway bar issues........

Assured, early ones didn't carry the larger sized torsion bars....

I used the Buckley rear mounts. They will outlast the car.

Tsunamiboy 12-05-2011 03:59 PM

I am not familiar with this problem? Can somebody post a picture of the problem part?

ShakinJoe 12-05-2011 04:36 PM

Just search " rear sway bar mount" in this forum.
