79 911 SC Brake Job

I am going to replace the pads and rotors on my car and wonder if I should upgrade to cross drilled rotors. There is a difference of about $60-80 +/- per wheel difference between x-drilled and solid...

What should I do?

If for street use, stay with the stock rotors. they are cheap and last a long time. 81'SC

Do you track or autocross your car?

I think I might have a better excuse for drilled rotors than, say, Jack. Rain. Sometimes it takes a revolution or two for the pads to contact the rotor. Briefly frightening. On a track, I guess I'd rather have the extra contact area, instead of holes!

If you are talking about the smaller stock SC/Carrera size rotors, you definately don't want drilled. Use slotted for best results.

The oem rotors which have cast in holes are fine also, but not available in the SC/Carrera size.

All drilled rotors will crack, rotors with cast holes will also eventually crack but after far more abuse.

As a car writer--"automotive journalist" is the fancy term--I recently tested a Ferrari Modena and did it at a Ferrari Challenge track event. I noticed that the stock Modena that I was driving had cross-drilled rotors and the race versions didn't. When I asked the Ferrari PR guy why, he said it was a "cosmetic" decision. The gold-chainers demand those little holes. The racers don't need them.

ATE makes a slotted brake rotor for 69-83 vented rotors (PowerDisks?). It sports a couple of swoopy elipsoidal grooves to wipe the brake pads.
