Turn signals do not work but Emergency Flashers do
I did search the forums but had no luck.
I have an 83 SC ROW. The turn signals do not work. No nothing. No indication on dash. The emergency lights do work. I also have a problem with the headlight high beam not working and just to add to the issues a horn that does not work. Any suggestions on where to start would be much appreciated thanks Geoff |
I have the same issue with my '87...the car has a few electrical gemlins that need to be chased down. Looking forward to getting some advice.

It is not uncommon to have a fried headlight switch and/or turn signal stalk.
First question. Do you have headlight relays installed? If not, buy them and install them. When I bought my SC, the turn signal stalk was fried. Emergency flashers worked but turn signals worked whenever they felt like it. If you don't put in the headlight relays and you replace the stalk, you run the risk of frying the new one. This is because headlight power runs through the stalk. (Not a great design). This has been discussed on the forum many times. A search should turn up plenty of results if you want to understand the whole history. You can buy the relays, headlight switch and turn signal stalk through our host. The 101 projects book from our host also explains the turn signal stalk replacement procedure. I would add it's a good idea to remove the driver seat unless you're a contortionist. :) |
Well, I spent Sunday lookng at the issue. Noticed another flasher unit was included in the box of parts that came with the car. After much mucking around removed the momo wheel and traced a loose wire. It was an earth. When I did stick my head under the dash to look at the wiring for the flasher unit, I noticed the wiring loom was not plugged into the relay...problem fixed, lights now work , horn is excellent and indicators work.
The only issue I now have is both indicators on the instrument panel come on regardless of the indicator chosen ie left or right. Any ideas? Geoff |
Both indicators going on is sure sign of a well-used relay. Pick up a new one from our host, it's located right behind the fuel gauge, or you can reach if from the front.

Can someone please point me to which relay I may need. My turn signal stalk and headlight relays were new. I started getting the dual indicators flashing, then the Turn Signals stopped working all together. I am thinking it may just be that relay but I haven't gotten under to pull it out just yet.

check the fuses and also confirm the wiring at the fuse box is good. I had a similar problem and the culprit was faulty wiring at the fuse box. The fact that the emergency flashers work but not the turn signals will indicate your relay is still good so save your money buying a new one.

Hmm, I will look into this later tonight but thank you very much for the picture. I appreciate it. I am hoping it may be a fuse or wiring issue, those are far simpler.

The first thing I would check is the stalk mechanism, after checking fuses.

The stalk itself is brand new.

Ok here is my situation. So the car has working headlights, tails, parking lights, euro emergency works, hazards work. I csn hear the relay clicking when its in hazard. But still it blows the #8 fuse when I put one in and power the car on. I haven't made any changes to the car either. Any clues?

Sounds like you have a wire going to ground somewhere in that circuit. They do rub and wear off the insulation over time. Relay bases can crack and fail, Connectors can fall off too.
Use an ohmeter and check the bottom of #8 fuse holder to ground resistance with the fuse out. If it is zero then you have a fault to ground to trace out. |

So I checked the wiring, found no real issue. Made sure all contacts and wires were intact and in place. Put in new bulbs front and rear, new fuse, everything worked fine. Drove the car today, no issues till I got to work. Now again the fuse is blown and no turns signals again. So odd.

Did you try to trace the short circuit with a voltmeter or ohmmeter?

Welcome to the world of an intermittent short...
Any chance there are wires on the new stalk chafing on the steering column or somewhere. You should probably visually check all the wires between the light switch, hazard flasher switch and turn stalk for worn or pinched insulation. Loose connectors that could touch each other as the car vibrates rolling down the road? |

Ok So I have figured out that it's the green wire with a yellow stripe that is grounding out someplace. Where, I have no clue.
