I was wondering what the black metal pieces between the cylinder heads are for? You can see these from under the car. I cant tell what they are covering if anything. They do have slight movement. Are they a type of heat shield? This is on an '83 3.0L

They are for directing air for cooling purposes. They can 'move' slightly since they are held in place with a clip across the top of the cylinder.
