Oil Change Question
I have only driven about 300 miles in the past year, since the last oil change.
Seems like a waste to change the oil again -- but everywhere I read it says do it every year no matter what. Do you think this applies to my "condition?" The dude abides. |

Hey Dude,
If you are not in a rush get an oil test kit and send it off for analysis.....you'll know for sure and have a better idea if the same happens again. Lots of oil to 'waste'.... |

I would say just change it. When sitting for a while, the oil can settle and get all funky. Although Im sure its fine to drive the car with the oil, depending on what oil you use a change is usually not that expensive. My car sits unused from around November to about March depending on weather. No matter what when I pull the car out in March I always put new oil in. It is most likely paranoia but I would rather have the piece of mind and be out 50$ then have some major engine issues.
Regards Dave

As to sources for oil analysis (should you be interested), there are several companies that do it....the two primary companies are Blackstone Labs ( Blackstone Labs ) and
Staveley Labs ( Staveley Services-ALS ). My preference (based on experience) is Staveley,...... As to your situation (condition), I'd change the oil (and filter). I've been shallow on the last 2 changes, not having sent any samples in on 'em,..the next change sample will go in for (more) historical data. In fact, just loaded the Techron on an almost full tank,..once this tanks' exhausted, she's up for another changeout of the "green stuff". Best to you, Doyle

Have it tested, you may be surprised....for fun I had my cummins diesel oil tested before a reg change and it was excellent...I've been testing it since and it is still good and going on about 38k miles...some vehicles 'pollute' their oil and some do not. BTW, the military does this and sometimes runs oil a lot longer than 38k. They will also report foreign matter (metal) in any report and it tells you what's going on in your motor. |

This question has been posted many times before and the general consensus is to change every year no matter what. Small price to pay compared to engine rebuilds.
The real solution is drive baby drive.

I once ran a very simple experiment just for fun. I drained some of the oil out of my car in to a mason jar and caped it for the winter. I left the jar on a shelf next to the car in my garage. I live in the north east so temperature changes are large, it will get as low as -10 in the dead of winter and come back to 90 in the spring. The oil sat for about 5 months while I did not drive the car. When I came back to the car in the spring I checked the jar and the oil had settled quite a bit. The oil on the bottom was clearly thicker and appeared far more dirty. The oil on the top was thin and clear. Since then I have always changed my oil every spring.

I don't recall at the moment, but I'm sure the site would (possibly) say so. I recall Staveley providing (requiring?) a program where I would buy a package deal for 12 months (12 tests)..Yeap, some $$ up front. I'm using my LAST bottle from the package so it's getting time to renew...I'll drop a line to note what current the current charges are.
Blackstone will, however do "single" samples@ single rate charges,.. Check with these vendors for their current pricing.. Best, Doyle

The oil engine was warm I guess, I had driven the car then let it sit to cool off enough to work on comfortably. The oil could not have been more than 3000 miles old, or 2 months. My oil tank has developed a nasty leak and needs to be drooped out this winter so i will be running the experiment again out of my own curiosity I will post pics of the results in the spring.
Regards Dave

Its not the mileage that is a concern here. Its contamination. Its $50. Dont be penny wise and pound foolish.

I wouldn't change it. If your car is properly tuned and doesn't suffer from excessive dilution from fuel in the oil it will be fine...I have in fact seen UOA's from Porsches that have gone 2 years with minimal mileage on the oil and it was perfectly fine. If it concerns you send a sample in to Stavely or Blackstone Labs. I am sure they will agree.

Just change it ... if you don't it'll haunt you thinking about it when you start it ... think of it as a christmas present to your PORSCHE ... it can't hurt ...
Also you didn't mention if the 300 miles was in 2 drives or 60 - 5 mile drives ... and that does make a difference ... Please change it ... your wallet may hurt for a bit .. but know one said maintaining a PORSCHE was cheap ... Steve |
