Ethymology of the hood badge

Can anyone direct me to a site that explores or defines the history, production, distinction, or clarification of the badge? i would like to discover which badge goes with each modal, year, or other distinguishing characteristics. I keep seeing orange, and red, and other colors and wonder how one would classify, clarify, or just get a sense of importance of the badges we spend so much time and money on. Any thoughts?
