Hi,

I bought a 1979 911 SC from a coffee shop friend. He drove it for 31 years and the transmission finally gave out. The odometer stopped working at 299,000 miles and my friend drove it for another 11 years. I tore the car apart and I'm starting to put it back together. I was just wondering what's the best way to post the progress and updates? In this forum under one thread? 911 SC Project?

Engine/transmission out

Kitchen table project: broken dogteeth, u shaped sychro ring, ground up metal. Replaced worn out and ground up parts. Bought a lot of bearings

Put back together

Scrapped CIS and installing Jenvey ITB's + went wild with engine paint (Guards Red)

The odometer broke at 299k miles and the owner drove it another 11 years!

The engine looks fantastic, any other performance upgrades besides the induction? If you hit the dyno, please post the results.

For the non-believers, here's a pic of the odometer (new gear ordered). The PO loves Porsches. He claims that he only replaced the clutch at 250k and the heads + engine was never taken apart. I've got instructions for 1 quart Marvel Mystery oil every oil change and a capful of it in every gas tank. I thought about taking the engine apart but I decided too many other irons in the fire. I drove it for a week without 1st gear and the engine ran like a sewing machine. I replaced all the seals and put in new tubes from the heads to the block.

I showed the PO the pictures of the engine last week. He keeps asking for the steering wheel. I'm not sure what he is going to do with it? He is in his 70's and since he sold me this 1 1/2 years ago he has been driving a scooter. He told me he walks a lot in the winter. He is glad to see that I'm working on it.

...I have to ask though, are you going to upgrade to SSI's and a free flowing exhaust? Those throttle bodies and red paint look awesome by the way!

Hi Craig,

I've got a new cat bypass pipe installed with a Innovate wide band oxygen sensor. Right now my first priority is to get it back together and running. ITB's could probably use a different cam + SSI's later.

I've got upholstery, headliner, throttle cable, body seals, sound dampening, stereo, speakers and other stuff spread around the house waiting for install. Hopefully, I'll get some of this stuff out of the house and into the car.

I still remember the wooden steering wheel to my 80's Fiat Spyder. You car would look better with a Prototipo anyways. And I'm guessing his wheel has a lot of memories in the grip that he'll never get to experience again.

Don't think that anybody doubts the mileage. We're saying that you gotta love SC's, when driven and driven properly, they'll run forever.

With you're upgrades, you'll only want to drive this car. I marvel at how much my car drives and feels better than any modern car even though it's 32 years old.

Awesome progress man. I just purchased an 82 sc and can't wait to get the car back on the road. Mine isn't as much of a project though, just a little work to bring it back from a 16 year slumber in a garage.

Thanks for the replies. This is good motivation. Today I'm going over to the anodizer to check on the window trim. Wind and polish took off all the black. Only problem is the anodizer can not figure out how to hold the parts without losing them in the tank. I think I'll let them off the hook and just install them with the silver look. My only other options are trim paint or powder coat. You can see what I'm talking about in one of the before pics. Other options?

I shot my trim pieces with etching primer and matte black paint two years ago and they are holding up very well.

I went to visit the anodizer and I was surprised. They got the small pieces done and the larger ones are in progress. I'm not sure if they want to see me again, I think they had problems figuring out how to rack this job. Anyways, I wasn't expecting any progress and I was planning to prime and paint them.
