won't go into 2nd gear

All other gears seem fine. It bucked a little in second, so I threw it in neutral, then it wouldn't go back into second. It physically won't go. It does have a short shift kit installed. Ohh and it is a 81 SC. I just replaced the fluid about 300 miles ago with swepco.

Where should I start here?

Thanks,

John

Hopefully it's just your linkage. Not sure how to best describe it but getting into second is the furthest your shift linkage needs to articulate so it's sensitive to good adjustment. I hear the short shift kit makes it seem even worse since you have less leverage. I would make sure your linkage is properly adjusted before thinking about breaking into the box.

may have blown the teeth off the syncro hub (dog tooth ring). then the syncro expands and blocks the shift sleeve. check the drainplug magnet for little teeth and don't drive it until you determine this is not the problem. a brake band, stop dog, anchor block and the syncro itself can go through gears and that's not a good thing.

+1 check the drain plug for bits and pieces.

I assume you had no issues prior to lube change, if drain plug comes off clean then consider going back to 80w90 weight conventional gear lube. If you have LSD then with additive.

Hope you don't find this:

If not the coupler, could it be the the fork under the cover?

Well I just pulled the plug and this is what I found. A lot of tiny metal flakes stuck to the magnet, and one bigger piece.

they don't all go to the magnet. probably more inside somewhere. pull off the shift guide plate and see if the fork is loose, as long as you have the oil drained. 2nd gear dog teeth are pointed, like the roof of a house. 1st gear teeth are angled like a lean-to.

Oh no, sorry to see that.

+1 take a look at the side access panel and post a pic of the components.

So you changed to Swepco from what ever it was in there and found debris like my pic? Did you find the larger peices as well? Did you have issues with second prior to Change out of the gear lube?

In anycase, post a pic of the components, we can better tell where to go from there.

Again sorry to see that pic.

Well I decided I was above my skill level here. I have my car with professionals now (flat6pac and gary fairbanks in CT). I did lose 5th gear today too trying to get it to the shop. It's worse than I thought!

Damn, while you are in there have them clean and lube the T/O bearing and Guide Tube.

Also have them check out the Fork for wear and potential fracture.

John, got the engine and trans out today and separated. The accumulator has gas coming out the bottom connection, needs replacing. The clutch is in the 7.2+mm rang out of 8 so its getting down.

I have the trans stripped of excess weight, now I can make the 150# for UPS. I talked to Gary Fairbanks Friday and he said ship it up. John will be happy to get it back.
Stripped, reinforced, belted down and shrink wrapped for the trip to Conn.

Gary will have the trans today. I m putting the better clutch on the flywheel, 7.9+.
I checked the distributor to make sure its advancing properly and found all kinds of dust in the distributor. Dust looks red, closer look there is a line in the cap from the rotor coming apart. The end of the rotor is gone.
